Default newb -- Got a couple questions !

Hi Guys, Great forum you got here.

I just bought a cheroke for a winter car and maybe summer off-roading (nothing too extreme).

It's has many miles but runs good.

1992 4X4 , Laredo

I got a couple issues that I would like to ask you guys. I tried the seach feature without any real results.

1. I am not able to shift the transfer case into N or 4L.... Whats going on ?

2. Got stuck in Part Time 4H. It would not go back to 2H. The lever would go but the 4 wheel drive was still on. After about 20 minutes of playing around it went back to 2H. Is this a known issue is there a fix , what could it be ?

3. I would like to know if there are any must tips and tricks... and any good info. I am brand new to jeeps. This is my first one. Can't wait to try it in the snow and mud !

I appreciate you help in advance guys, thanks !

In order to shift into 4L, you must be COMPLETELY stopped and in neutral. Sometimes the shift lever can be a little stubborn, especially when it's cold outside.

Welcome to our addiction..

How much is many miles? These things are known to run for a 200-300K miles..

1. Check the linkage, make sure its not binding or rusted.

2. When you shift back to 2wd, going forward or backward 15-20 ft. This seems to be pretty common.

To shift into N and 4lo you have to push down a little on the shifter and then put into 4lo. When you put it back into 2hi be in neutral and put it in to 2hi then back up alittle. It sounds like you t-case hasn't been used much if at all. I sugest you use it atleast once a week to keep everything lubed.

+1 and you may need to roll a whole 1/2" or so if it doesn't want to engage and then get it to (or at least I've had some of my other trucks need that bit to lineup it seems).

Wow that did not take long ! thanks for all the replies !

So I managed to get it into N and 4L. Looks like those 2 modes have not been used much. I played it for quite a while and now no more issues to get it into N and 4L.

I am still having the issue that it gets stuck in Part Time. I can manage to get it off by: backing , foward, n .. shift , repeat many times and eventually it will go off... hope I will find a trick to it, right now its pretty anoying. I did lube the linkage it looks in decent shape.

as for miles I got 170k ! I've heard they are pretty though trucks .

This is most likey because the t-case aint been used much and needs to be worked and lubed. Use your 4wd atleast once a week and it will evently get better.

Ill will give that a try. You might be right because it seems to be a bit better than the first time i used it. Should I just shift it in 4 wheel drive or should I actually drive for a while in 4 wheel drive ?

Drive it for about 100 yards for a good work through but not on the hard top, do it off road or on a dirt road.
