People say not to use it on the road, what if the road is too slippery? Will it be fine then?

if you have a np231 i wouldnt use it unless you felt the road conditions are dangerous. if you have np242 you can just click it in and not worry about it.

I use 4 hi when there is enough snow on the roads to cause my rears to spin. Say 3 inches of fresh snow minimum before I hit the 4hi. Sometimes on plowed (snowpacked) but never sanded/salted roads. Figure that somethings gotta slip in 4 wheel drive. My new to me 92 has "Part Time" so I get to be less careful with 4x4 and the road surfaces this winter.

I would say using 4hi is a reasonable choice as soon as the roads are too slick for you to drive in 2hi.
If you're really not sure when it's a good idea: 2hi until you can't drive in it any more, then go to 4hi.

I use it anytime its wet and the *** end loses traction regularly, the shift back when I'm going. Other than that, NEVER use P/T 4H on a dry, paved road. Other than that, I use P/T when I need it on the 92, unless its snowy, then I just leave it in F/T, my 98 I just go in and out of depending on conditions.

I don't know what TC I have, it does not have P/T and it is a '98 Sport.
Up to what speeds can I use 4HI? Because we get a lot of black ice and what not around here. And I tend to slip a lot.

Your options on the NP 231 TC are 2HI--4HI--N--\4LO NP242 is 2HI--4HI Lock (part-time)--4HI (Full-time)--N--2LO Lock (Part-Time). If you only have 1 4HI option then you have the np231. If this is the case you only want to use 4HI when you are driving on slick roads i.e. snow, ice, mud, wet grass, loose gravel, etc. If you have the np242 with full time 4WD you can use that all the time. All road conditions as it states on the sun visor.
