New xj owner helps with Trans
Hi Everyone, I’m excited to announce just picked an XJ with 149k miles. Many leaks are going on but it’s a project.
My question is trans service, with 149k 2001 sport 4x4 automatic. Should I proceed in a transmission service drain and fill? Or just leave it be and keep it at proper level?
Always been reading when you have a. automatic and service never been done. You do the trans service, you cause more hard than good.

If you don't know when or if it was last done I would recommend at least doing a drain and fill. I've heard of 'issues' coming up if you drop the pan and start messing around in there if you don't get the filter or gasket reseated properly but just a drain and fill is cheap insurance.
There's some good info on fluids and such here to add to your list of things to do if you haven't already: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/i-j...w-what-239162/
Enjoy the new XJ!

That's a bit of a wives tail, as most people start thinking about a flush when they already have a problem. Drain and refill. No need to drop the pan to change the "filter" as it's just a metal mesh screen. Dexron-III/Mercon transmission fluid, not ATF4+.

THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Factory interval is drain and fill every 30,000 miles for normal service. 15,000 miles for severe duty like a lot of towing, postal delivery and taxi. You'll need 4 quarts of Dex/Merc, a 14mm socket, and a transmission funnel. Oh yeah, a drain pan also.

Yes and THAT [insert arrow pointing upwards that I don't have on my mobile's keyboard for some reason] too!
Can I plug my "forward flush" here again? 😆

Oh you good man!
Yes it does. It fixes virtually everything but you need to dilute it for certain applications or you'll achieve the opposite effect- its tricky stuff
Ps:I saw your snout on a YouTube tonight😁
