It's cool, I'm in no rush to upgrade and put OBA and a winch on. I found a local place here in Denver that rebuilds alternators. They can also configure it to put out whatever amperage I want.

upgrading amperage on an alternator is impractical. it will work, but have a severely decreased lifespan.

your bad alternator casing isn't big enough to generate more amps...and the end result of upgrading it is even less material to wear, a.k.a. it will break down quicker.

the 136a alternator they speak of is roughly the same casing, but machined to different tolerances, and slightly bigger, with almost exactly the same mounting holes. it was designed to have that higher power output, and you can expect a good lifespan out of it, provided you don't sink it in mud and never wash it.

I got out of having my alternators upgraded on DD's, after the one on the buick 3800 motor in my 86 mj crapped out for the 3rd time. you get charged a dollar an amp for upgraded rebuild, and no warranty. gets expensive when it's failed 3 times in under 10k miles of driving.

I also might add...sure it's easy to replace the 4.0 alternator, but I HATE working under vehicles. that alternator is in a crap location. I'd rather do it once and be done with it.

Not sure wtf you're talking about... You buy it once, keep it clean. If you dunk it mud dump a gallon of distilled water on it... No different than any other alternator. 136amp alternators have NO different life span than the stock 90 amp alternator.

Oh yeah! It's definitely in the worst location. Finally getting it maneuvered out, you have to deal with maneuvering the new one in and when you finally get it in place trying to get everything lines up just right to mount!

I've found if the you jack the engine up a few inches it makes removal a breeze.

Yes, you are correct. I did end up doing this as well. It did help, but then trying to lean into the motor compartment while installing the new one really hurts the back as you have to maneuver it just right..which was time consuming haha

Yeah, it's not fun. Practice makes perfect though. I can swap out an alternator in under 10 minutes now. Had a bit too much fun in the mud and killed 4 alternators in 1 month. Advanced auto will no longer honor any warranties on alternators I buy from them My work around was to relocate the rear washer fluid hose right above my alternator, now when I go out I fill my washer fluid tank with distilled water, haven't had an issue since.
