Sounds good, like I mentioned before...I'll check the reading with my multimeter when I get home after class. This finally gives me a reason to use my new Snap-On multimeter

Anyone know where I can pick up an alternator? Like NAPA, AZ, Car Quest, AAP, Pep Boys?

I use Napa for electronics. I've had problems with alternators from both Oreilly and Autozone.

If you're going to replace the alternator it might be a good time to go with an upgraded one. You can use the 136amp alternator out of the v8 5.2l grand cherokees.

136 Amp Alternators that will fit can be found in:

1997-1998 Dodge Full Size Van
1997-1998 Dodge Dakota
1998 Dodge Durango
1997-1998 Dodge Ram
1997-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

How is the mounting part of it, same as original? Mods?

I like Advanced Auto Parts, just backside I can usually find a coupon for buying something online and picking it up w/in the nearest location.

That's how I bought the Optima! Original: $200, what I bought it for: $145!

One thing to note, if you are going to upgrade your alternator output you will need to upgrade your battery cables.

I was once told by a buddy that happens to know alot about auto electric, that you should never disconnect the battery on any vehicle with electronic ignition and an ECU because it causes a big spike in voltage that can fry the ECU.

Sounds about right, auto electronics is something I never liked getting into unless it was changing a bulb, fixing a loose connection, or changing a fuse! Unfortunately, I still have yet to test the alternator. Kind of just been overwhelmed with this nursing program. So this afternoon after 6 hrs of chemistry I'll do it and update everyone!

Just make sure your equations are balanced on each side of the reaction haha.

Well I hooked up the multimeter to the battery and it's definitely the alternator. After starting starting it up and letting it run with the radio on, headlights on, and heat on blast to pull a full load. Went from 11.48-to-11.39 while on full load.

Went to AAP and was able to swap the optima yellow top out with a new one. Also ordered a Remy alternator 90amps; original price $119 dropped it down to $90.

I was told that if I increase the amperage output to 136 from 90, it cause issues like blowing fuses, especially if I don't have a winch or OBA yet.

Don't believe that...What do you think people with winches and OBA do while those items are not on (drawing current)? Just because you make more current than the system uses doesn't mean you'll blow any fuses. I run a 200 amp Mean Green alternator with two Yellowtops. The only difference you'll notice with a better alternator is that your battery gauge won't drop as easily with lights, OBA, and winches.

Not true at all. Shoulda got the 136A one. I'd go back and order the other one.
