New to jeeps and I have a few problems!!
First off I have done lots of searching on these problems and cant find to many straight answers..
I have 90 Cherokee auto, with 160k miles, new plugs, newer cap/rotor, fuel filter.
First when I turn the key on what lights on the dashboard are suppose to light up? All i get is the Seat belt light. I guess I was thinking the check engine light would light up then shut off?
Second, I have Tryed the key off and on trick to get codes and dont get ANY blinks out of the CEL.
Third, when cold it idles at around 600 then after warm it idles around 300 almost on the verge of dying.
Fourth, It runs good when driving and has plenty of power but when I was following my old lady up a hill it started slowing down and and no matter how much gas she gave it it wouldnt go, Then all of a sudden it blew a tiny bit of fuel smoke, backfired and took off.
Fifth, it seems like it takes forever to start, like 10 cranks or more. Roughly about 5 seconds worth.
Also there is a Plastic splitter in the coolant line connecting to the lower heater core hose, and leads to i dont remember were. But at the heater core end it has a bell looking thing with maybe a sensor or a square plug then splits into 2 different hoses like a wishbone. Not sure what it is called. I know its leaking I just need to know what to call it.. lol
Thanks for any help you guys can give..

Third, when cold it idles at around 600 then after warm it idles around 300 almost on the verge of dying. May be the battery, or see below

Carefull they break EASY.

93gc40 Thanks for the reply. I went to the yard today and picked up extra TPS and IAC for free so just in case mine are bad. If it ever cools down I was going to go out and Clean the existing IAC.
I did change the fuel filter and I also Did a seafoam treatment. Half in tank and half through vacuum.
The Coolant line thing I am talking about is very strange, The one you described has a vacuum dashpot like thing on it, which i picked up at the junk yard, Then there was another style which was a metal wishbone looking splitter, And mine is totally different then either of those. Its amazing how many things were different from 88-93. Anyways I just grabbed one of each style just in case mine was suppose to have the vacuum deal.
Were is the CPS located?
Also When you turn the key on is the CEL suppose to light up for a second then shut off? Or are these different then most cars?

CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) is at the back of the motor kinda on top of the bell housing. CEL should light up when you turn the key on, just like most other cars.
is this the coolant valve:

I`ve had bad luuck with those heater valves..Replaced 3 I think..I`m sure they would last longer if they just sat there undisturbed but I`m always in there tinkering with something and they get pushed to the side a lot

That heater valve is one that I found at the yard but not the one in the car. The one that is in there is all metal and only 3 ports. So for now I dont know the repercussions but I just straight tubed it for now until i can find the right one.
New problem. I cleaned the IAC straight tubed the heater hose Now it wont run warm. If I let it cool down it starts runs for a few then starts stumbling. When you rev it up it backfires through the intake and runs really low rpms then after a minute or so dies..

I thought about that but when I was at the yard I grabbed a backup, I put that in and it still wouldnt run. Its crazy yesterday it ran great. I put a flowtech muffler on, Then it popped a coolant leak. Sat until today.
When I started it today ran great. Went to the junk yard picked up heater blower motor, iac, the sensor next to that and some heater valves. I cleaned the IAC, replaced bad heater blower, and straight piped the heater valve and now nothing. Also I plugged the vacuum line that went to the valve. Here is a picture of the valve that was in mine.

OK.. Today I pulled the plugs again cleaned and regapped to .40, from other post that i have read that helped. I also put 2 gallons of gas in it. The gas gauge before I added was still just above the red mark. It fired right up, ran for 20 min or so with no problems like I had before. Drove it around the block and it did fine.. So now I am to the conclusion that either the gas gauge is out of sync or when the tank was low it picked something up in the gas tank. So tomorrow I am going to let it run until it dies like it did before. Then I will probably pull the tank to see if there is sediment or something in the tank that is being picked up by the strainer..

When my guage warning light pops on, I generally have slightly over 3 gallons left in the tank.
Once on the highway in the middle of nowhere, I was sweating bullets when I couldnt find a gas station and took that needle almost another 1/4 tank's worth of notch past the E. I kept waiting for the sputter but it never came. When I finally found a gas station and filled it, I did some math and figured I had her down to a pint of gas in tank.
That's some reserve.
