Default new guy with a problem

Hello my name is Fletcher I'm 16 and I bought my jeep about a year ago and I love it. Its a 1999 cherokee sport with a golen straight six with banks headers, 4.5 skyjacker lift, flowmaster 40 and a few other upgrades. I just found this site and it looks awesome. I was wondering if some off you more experienced guys could help me out. My problem is when I'm driving or idleing my jeep will surge. I've done some research and I think its my TPS but I want to get some second opinions before I go out and spend $50. I am 16 and on a budget. This surge is very drastic it looks like I am a drunk driver hammering the gas and then slamming the brakes. I have checked the vaccum lines and they appear to be fine. It goes away after it warms up. What would you do??

I like the idea about the TPS.. but you might want to look at a fuel load issue also. fuel pump, fuel filter, spark

Take the TPS and clean it with some carb cleaner, see if that helps any. If it does, but not quite enough, replace it. I would also run a pressure test on the fuel rail, see if it's fluctuating when you get on it which would mean fuel pump or fuel filter. Do you know the history if the Jeep, was it maintained?

get yourself a multi-meter for starters. they're really cheap and can be a lifesaver. Then use the multi-meter to test your TPS. If you need in-depth directions on how to do it then PM me. You may also want to make sure you don't have a vaccum leak somewhere. The fact that it goes away when it warms up makes me wonder if it might be your IAT or Coolant temp sensor. Start with the TPS though and go from there.

A thorough cleaning of the throttle body, including removing and cleaning the Idle Air Control should be the very first thing you do before buying any parts. $4 for a some carb and choke cleaner vs. $50-60 for a TPS that you may not even need.

Mine did that, gotta do more than just look at the vaccum lines, I replaced all the lines that looked old and it stopped surging, Just a suggestion

I hope its not your lock up converter in the tranny, that would = rebuilt tranny. you can test i, when it surges put on your brakes a little and watch the rpms, if they shoot up then that what it is

I believe it was maintained, it has a golen block with only about 10,000 miles on it. The jeep is rust free. When we got the jeep the banks headers had a crack in it, and we replaced it. It has a hesco throttle body spacer.

Got a volt meter and tested the TPS and when it would hit 3 volts it would drop to nothing. So I bought a new TPS and it is still sputtering.

Thanks everyone for your help it ended up being a 02 sensor. I figured I should post up for anyone searching through old threads with a similar problem.
