Hey guys,

I live in the SE Phoenix area near Tempe. Just bought a used 1993 Cherokee XJ off craigslist. This is my first 4x4. Not sure how to post pics using my phone I'll post some later.

I took it out near Four Peaks today to try out the 4 wheel drive. Everything seemed to be working well. On the way back I was going through some shallow water and gave it some gas while in 4H. It made a weird sound. Then when I kept on driving and went to shift it started grinding pretty bad.

So I shifted it between 1st and 2nd to see and it kept wanting to go but also grinding a lot. I put it back in 2H and drove home. Looking underneath quickly I can't see anything.

Any ideas on what I broke hahah? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Grinding could be low fluid in transfer case or maybe an axle problem

Linkage

 

Alright so it took awhile since I had to go buy a socket that fit the 30mm T-case plugs. Checked it, it was low and not very red. So I went ahead and drained it and put some new fluid in. Took it for a small, quick test drive and it was not making the same loud grinding noise. Hopefully that's all it needed.

Figured I may as well change out the Tranny fluid so I did that. As well as changed the oil since it looked pretty bad. I'll post up some pics. Not sure if there is a newbie thread somewhere that I should introduce myself in.

 

 

Have you adjusted your linkage?

 

I personally haven't touched the linkage. It looks like it is not exactly in line anymore. The PO mentioned with the lift that the T-case/Tranny mount was dropped as well. Is there a way to adjust it to account for that?

 

Put your transfer case all the way in 4l, there's a bolt on your linkage, loosen the bolt until your linkage slides freely in the bolt hole. Then tighten the bolt up and try your transfer case

 

Oh yea I didn't notice that it can slide along that one rod. I will do this tomorrow, thanks

 

And from the looks of it, you don't have a transfer case drop. Drive to Tucson. I'll help you adjust it

 

This is what I am assuming to be a T-case drop. I am not sure though.





Here are some pics of the linkage while in 4L. I adjusted it slightly and now it doesn't seem to be engaging 4H at the right location so I am planning on adjusting back to where it was.

 

OK so you do have a drop. People say those are a no no. That a sye kit is best. But if it won't go in 4h now then adjust it back. I had the same problem. Adjusted mine and it wouldn't go back into 2wd so I had to put it back to where it was

 

Thanks for the info. I didn't even realize the problems with the slip yoke and t-case drops. Guess I will have to do some more research and figure out which SYE to install.
