Question New Guy needing Lift advice

Hay guys I have recently bought a xj that I love. within the first week I put a flowmaster and a custom built cold air intake that works great and cost me as much as what ever high flow filter you would like to put on it.
But now im looking to start turning it into a trail rig that I can drive to school every day and still do some pretty good wheeling. what kind of lift should I look at and how high can I go with it befor I start making it ruph to drive on the road?
Thanks for all your help.

i'd recommend a 3.5 Rubicon Express lift with some 31s.

To maintain decent ride quality I would stick around 3 - 4 inches of lift. Anything above this and things can get more costly and complicated.

As far as lift brands, use the SEARCH function. You will get so much information it will make your eyes water . If thats not enough, you can also google cherokee lift kit.

To give you a head start some of the more popular lifts are -

Rough Country
Rustys
Rubicon Express
Old Man Emu

In my opinion any 3" lift is going to be about the same. Some come with lower control arms, track bars, sway bar exensions or discos, etc... The more it comes with the higher the cost (most of the time)

These are only a few of many....

OME gives you a great ride but is nto a true lift kit. you just buy the springs and leafs then shocks, nothing else. that is what i have/puting in need to finish the rear

No matter which lift you get make sure you get good shocks. Good shocks will make for a much much better ride.

OME shocks FTW!

but like xer0 said, the OME "lift" is more of a suspension setup, for a nice ride, and not gaining height, they do make a quality shock though. just search around on here, it all depends on what kind of wheeling you want to do with the jeep.

Don't go with rustys. Bad products and bad customer service. Expecially the trac bar.

I think a lot of people would agree that their basic lift kits are good, its when components get more complex that its a little more questionable.

If it wasnt for shipping I wouldnt have hesitated to install a Rusty's 3-4.5 inch lift on mine. Bought the 4.5" lift on my old XJ used and abused and it still performed great.

I ordered other stuff here and there and never had an issue with customer service.

My 4.5" lift from them was just a hassle. The springs were ok and thats about it. I have replaced everything so far that I got from them, except the leafs.

For customer service they were mainly bad. One of the people tried to argue with me about the parts that I got (which were wrong). Another time they would not send me a new tre after the first one broke (took less than 5months). The one time they good service was when the Tre broke on the trac bar, while I was on the freeway, and nearly caused an accident. The phone call was probably the angriest I have ever been.
