Default New CPS

I found this while looking for something else. It appears to replace the factory CPS with one which is easier to get to and easier to check. What do you guys think and have you ever seen it or another similar one?

If I am reading that right it just replaces the connector?? If so I don't really see it as a worth while mod..just my opinion though..

There are two parts. One is a cps that fires off of the front harmonic balancer and the other part is an adapter to adapt the factory plug to the new CPS.

Think thats the CPS for a fuel injection swap on an older 4.2L Wrangler?

I believe Hesco makes the FI kit.

It gives the years as starting with a '91 and it is also listed under 4.0L Jeeps parts. So you may be right but I don't see any reason that the trigger has to be the flywheel. As long as the signal comes from something rotating at the same speed it shouldn't make a difference to the computer, flywheel or harmonic balancer.
The only drawback is that it will then be more vulnerable to trail debris and damage. If it is easier for us to get to then it would be easier to get damaged too.

Agreed.

Taken from the description:

This kit will work with all 4.0L engines from 1991-2003. Designed to trigger the ignition from the harmonic balancer instead of the flywheel. Provides a simple alternative to having to replace the bell housing or trying to index a sensor in the stock bell housing. If you are using a factory harness from the donor vehicle your connector may not fit the crank sensor. replace it with crank sensor connector #56016983.

Looks like the intended purpose is for a 4.0L swap where you dont have the index in the flywheel.

Or the hole in the bell housing.

If it mounts on the bottom side of the engine then it might be in harms way but it he sensor itself mounts above the balancer I dont think it would be too bad. Something would have to come up into the engine compartment risking being hit by the fan and going into the radiator.

Looks like it mounts above the harmonic balancer and can easily be mounted and not used until your OEM CPS craps out then you just need to plug in the new one and off you go. The real problem is the initial cost. $300 sounds pretty high but may be better than spending the night in the woods or on a far flung trail somewhere.

Yeah, i meant index in bellhousing.

Blue, that actually sounds like a good plan. I'd be interested in a secondary CPS which was already mounted and could be utilized trailside or on the freeway easily. Good thoughts...

Did a little snooping around and came across a pic/page that gives a bit more info.

Are there other vehicles that have the CPS on the front dampner? Maybe the dampner would be interchangeable and with some machine work the bracket wouldnt be hard to make and use the stock CPS.

I know may of the mid-late 80's GM's (2.8/3.1/3.3/3.8L V6's) used a harmonic balancer CPS but those are mounted BEHIND and the triggering ring(s) rotate THRU slot(s) in the CPS. But i do not believe that would work for our application.

This looks like a job for some major late-night net-research. (Striking my best superhero pose) Da..dada..da (as opposeds to DeDeDe)
