Angry New Axle :/

Well took my jeep to mechanic today to try to diagnose my noise. told me i am gonna need new axle a complete one. if i were to buy one how much should i pay for a complete one knuckle to knuckle. can i myself put the axle in and just have it aligned or does it need to be professionally installed.

will an axle from a 98 fit directly into my 2000?

What noise are you hearing front or rear and an axle from the junk yard shouldnt be much more then 250 and axles in XJs are easy to take an swap out it can be done at home with basic tools i think the mechanic just wants to make money off you

Yea, what noise are you hearing? It could be as simple as a bearing that has gone bad. I wouldnt exactly jump to the conclusion that you need a new axle just cause some mechanic told you.

As for your axle swap question. You shouldnt have to line up the axle itself since your trackbar is not adjustable unless your lifted. Everything is just bolt in. You would probably have to align the steering wheel and tierod and thats it.

Pretty much for the most part it's just unbolt and re-bolt in. if its a DD might want to have the alignment checked after the swap. I would say you could get a full replacement of CL or a JY for between 100 to 300 dollars/

Should probably specify if it's the front or rear axle that needs replacing / work.

well the pinion bearing around input shaft on front differential is bad is cause play in gears in the differential cause the rack and pinion to go bad

wait...What?

I helps to properly describe the parts by their correct name. If this is what your mechanic said......find a new mechanic.

There is no Input shaft on a dana30 axle
Rack an Pinion are steering components.....and your XJ does not have a rack & Pinion system.

Now if your trying to tell us that the gears are bad because of a failed pinion bearing....it's possible. Not definite....just possible.

My $.02:
Get a catch pan and drain the diff.
Spray the internals down with a can of brake parts cleaner.
Grab your favorite flashlight and start inspecting the Ring gear, the Pinion, and the Carrier.

Take lots of good quality Hi-Rez pics (NO CELL PHONE PICS!!!!!!) and post them in this thread.

Why throw money at a new/replacement if you don't even know for certain what the problem is.

We're trying to save you some money........

if the bearing is bad it can be as cheap as 20 bucks for a new one. take it alteast 2 other shops and see what they say and compare the answers you get.
