I just replaced the cyl. head on my 2001. I bought a new (0331 improved) cylinder head from Clearwater Cylinder (via E-bay) for $425 (includes shipping). ..as you say, gaskets were just at $100+. Total $ with oil, filter, coolant. etc. ...right at $560. I plan to change the oil again next week to get any remaining "junk" out.

gms0623, to be honest, if you've never done a repair on this scale, IMO, I would not attempt this w/o a knowledgeable assistant...and unless you're real strong, or have a means to lift the head off/onto the block, you'll need help anyway. Head weighs 85 lbs (per shipping box). This is NOT a difficult job, but you should have a FSM (or a Chilton/Haynes manual at a minimum). The most diificult part is getting to the rearward manifold bolts (not visable...have to feel and use different socket extentions). As far a tools: you need a good mix of US/metric 1/2, 3/8 sockets, wrenches and extentions. A torque wrench is a MUST for the cylinder head installation. I wouldn't skimp on cheap gaskets to save a buck-or-two. You'll need the cylinder head gasket, combo intake/exhaust gasket, valve cover, and thermostat housing gaskets...may as well put a new 195 degree thermo in while it's out (cheap). I prefer Fel-pro.. and I'm sure there are other good gaskets available. I would also consider buying a new cylinder head bolt set (about $25) unless you're real confident the ones currently installed have never been reused...supposed to have a dab of paint on them ??? (Not worth the risk of snapping a head bolt off and going through that PITA) If you attempt this, just make sure you have all parts, oil, filter, coolant, and take your time. Good luck and keep the forum informed.

2X on good quality gaskets...Felpro is my choice!
