I am hating my XJ the more I work on it. Removing that thing afte being on there for 19 years has proven to be a major job! I was able to break the switch assembly off and not I am stuck with the metal collar around the shaft and cannot get it off. I have been banging on it with a chisel to try am pry it off, but its not happening after 2 hours.
Does anyone have a picture of the shaft with no NSS installed? I have spent the last 30 min searching and all I can find is pic of the sensor installed or just the sensor itself. Even searching the FSM is not showing removal or installation diagram. I am starting to think I doing it wrong. I tried fitting the new NSS on the shaft but it sits out too far (I assume because the remnants of the old collar is still on there). Should I keep banging away until the collar breaks?
Just chisel in 1 area (like @ 9:00 to the shaft or wherever you have the best shot at it) to split or break the remaining piece of collar. Needless to say wear eye protection.
I haven't done one myself, but read allot here. The shaft has some bit of in/out play, right? If you can wedge that bit out against the casing with something, then deliver a crisp smack to the end of the shaft that could brake it free. If you could heat that "remnant" all the better. Of course a torch there is a fire problem.
Or a dremmel/cutting wheel, or get a "purchase" on both sides to pry. Spray/wait...
I just bypassed mine and left it at that. Other than not having backup lights it's no big deal. True you CAN start your Jeep in gears other than Park or Neutral but you'd have to turn the key then reach down and shift into Drive or something then reach back up and finishing turning the key to start. I mean it COULD happen but...
I tried my dremel, but I was afraid of nicking the trans lines. I am going to get a better chisel and dead blow hammer and get it finished today. I was just worried that I might have been trying to break the wrong part.

Well, I finally got the collar off! I had to drill it and beat the crap out of it with chisels and screw drivers. What a PITA!!! Hopefully, I never have to do that again!
