I can barely start my Jeep in neutral anymore so I decided to take out the Neutral Safety Switch & clean it out. I sprayed the NSS with PB blaster waited an hour then pried it out only for it to break before it was completely taken out. I know I can get another NSS at the local PicknPull for nothing, but I can't get the remains of it off. My main question/concern is is if I pulled the shaft out? Because I tried hamering the threaded nut back on in attempt to get it to loosen up, but it didn't move.
Also I switched gears twice when twisting in attempting to get it off. I heard it click & the jeep moved forward each time. (I had the jeep chocked up & the E-brake on. My driveway is all a slight grade). It was in park originally, so I assume I put it in neutral & I can turn it back twice and put it back in park.
I took a few pictures with my camera. It's all I got. tried to get a decent shot.

I've never had to do an NSS before, but I've read that you put the nut on a couple threads and use 2 smallish screwdrivers to pry on each side of the nut. Again, I'm not speaking from first hand experience.

Well the good news is that being in this position won't keep you from starting and driving the Jeep until you figure it out. Just bypass the NSS for now. I have a NSS in my hand right now and from the photos it appears the center part of the switch is still stuck on the stud somehow. I recall when I removed mine and got another at the local junkyard I had to do a lot of prying to get it to come off the stud so maybe blast it good with penetrating oil and let it soak overnight then starting working it free. Keep us informed!

Thanks guys. Will do. I googled some close ups of the valve shaft. And it appears that mine didn't pull out. I still can't believe tapping it with a hammer didn't move that threaded piece back on(I didn't hit it really hard, but). Also I thought the NSS housing would go over the threaded piece instead of pushing it off the shaft. I didn't see it mentioned in any of the write-ups I've seen.
EDIT: Oh I see the threaded part is also a part of the NSS switch. I wouldn't know that, because mine is no longer apart of the switch. lol

Man ill tell you,i tried removing my NSS for an hour the other day, soaking it with PB etc. I even heated it up with a propane torch, and went as far as breaking off one of the "ears" that the nut threads onto to get more Pb in there and more movement to loosen up the shaft. Im sure i could get it off ,but it was going to break. Until i have a spare in my hand im leaving it for now....
I can start mine in park and neutral, just no reverse lights.
You can bypass the NSS as a temp... on the plug by the firewall just jump the b and c wires together. I used one of those blue clamp connectors to do it

I would do the same but I need reverse lights to pass inspection this month.
I got the broken piece off. It was probably just as hard to pull off. I just knew there was only one way of getting it off. Long needle nose plyers did the trick. It's easier than using two screwdrivers on each side.
I still don't understand how I put the transmissiion in neutral with the shifter still in park and not having to press the brake. How do I get it back in park? Am I able to turn it back two more clicks?
Here's a picture of the broken collar that's apart of the arm in the NSS.

All I did was turn it so it went out of gear, but It just went back in. Because now that I put the shifter in "N" neutral the valve shaft is vertical as it should be when I put on the NSS.
Sunday I'll hit up the salvage yard for the NSS & a cable that is frayed. I beleive it's keeping it from down shifting when it should. It's connected to the throttle and goes to the transmission.

Went to the Salvage yard & pulled a couple. I pulled one, it came off easy. The large nut was so loose; I used my fingers. Another jeep had what looked to be a new one. I loosened the nut so I could pry it and it broke off the threads. So bought them both to build rebuild a good one. They were $4 a piece.
I tighten the housing really tight to help keep crap out. Putting it on wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. It wouldn't go over the shaft. I'm guessing it was surface rust. I sanded it for a few minutes and tapped it on. I didn't adjust it or anything. I just put the jeep in neutral and tightened it up. It starts in neutral & park. The reverse lights work.
What reasoned is the hole in the top of the NSS housing. Is it to spray contact cleaner in?
