Do I need to drain the transmission pan before removing the neutral Safety Switch??

No. You do know that can be cleaned/adjusted? Anyway spray it with something asap, I gather it can be a real hassle sliding them off the shaft. Have fun!

I followed the direction in this article and the project went very well.
the backup lights have returned.

Good on ye, mate.
Make sure you can start in Park and Neutral, and the NSS is adjusted correctly.
