Neutral Safety Switch
I recently had a nss go out on my 98 xj. Only problem is after replacing the switch. The engine light refuses to stay off. I know I fixed the problem correctly because the car starts now and only in park like it should. What would cause the light to stay on indicating a bad nss? Is there any way to temporarily disable it just so I can get my emissions test done without being hassled for the engine light being on?

Clear Codes
I second the person asking whether you cleared the codes. If you goto Autozone some of the code checkers have the ability to clear codes but they are not allowed to clear the codes; however, sometimes you can get them to do it. I just asked to look at the codes on the device by holding the device and then accidentally hit the clear codes button.

I did clear it but it keeps coming back on. I have my own scanner. I have been clearing it every day. And sometimes it will come back on the same day during the second start up. I have been told to wait for the outside air temp to drop and the computer should finally reset itself. But like I said I have to take an emissions test by the end of september to renew my stickers.

That's a good one ... if it were me, not knowing any different, and if you haven't already, I might try disconnecting the battery and unplugging the PCM for a few minutes to see if that would stop it.

To clear the codes without a scanner, disconnect the positive cable and touch it to the negative cable. This discharges a capacitor in the PCM that wipes the error codes.
