Need Help with Shift Solenoid 96 Jeep cherokee sport
I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0 4 speed i have NO idea what im doing with the transmission pan etc i replaced my gasket and filter and its still not shifting but the solenoids that i bought with the kit only one fit and the other two did not i dont know if they sre the right ones or what if anyone can help me in the right direction that would be amazing!
be very careful not to break the plastic clips that attach power wires to the solenoids
2 solenoids are the same, the TC one is different
apply 12V to each solenoid, it will click if working
(or measure resistance from the harness beside the dipstick and battery negative, should be around 11-12 ohms for each solenoid)
offer up the new ones...if they wont fit, and the others are failed, order some correct ones, there is a current thread about them on "non-modified XJ" forum advising suppliers
Some of the aftermarket solenoids seem to need a little tweaking to fit. I've seen a few report where the bolt hole needed enlarged or the mounting ear trimmed a bit.
my symptoms right now are it not shifting at all even me manually shifting its not working when i drive it it wont go past 20/25 mph and if it does my rpm will go up to 3k-4k before it goes any faster witch i dont do because i dont want to blow my transmission.
Did you try unplugging the trans computer and manual shifting? If it's still not shifting manually with the trans computer unplugged, it's not the solenoids or anything electrical. Check that the throttle body cable to the trans is adjusted properly, as being way to loose can cause no shifting.
If you can shift manually with the computer unplugged then I'd suspect a bad #2 solenoid, bad throttle position sensor, a bad rear output speed sensor, or wiring to any of those.

You can disconnect the solenoids which disallows TCM control at the plug by the dipstick, their is 3 plugs, I think its the grey one
download the Factory Service Manual from this site
its possible to diagnose transmission faults, but you must be systematic, and preferably have access to a good manual
Just a quick bit of info on testing the transmission manually with the transmission harness unplugged (as awg suggests). In 1-2 position it will hold onto 1st gear up to around 35-40MPH before shifting into 2nd and your revs will go up to 4k or so doing this. As a test you will be fine doing this. When in 3 it will only go into 3rd and in D only into 4th (OD).
Your transmission connector should look like this one although it may be the later style, found where awg says. I have a RHD so bits in my image will look different in the background.
Does your fuse board under the hood look like this one? If so check Fuse 21. If not, you may need to post an image or find an image of the layout yours has.
