was just looking around the web and found a rear end, selling for 125. its advertised as out of an 89 Cherokee. the seller gave these numbers of the ID plate.
53005193 3:55 60538
I can see that the gears are 3.55, but am unsure if its a 35 or 44. please help

I'm by far no expert, but I recall seeing today that the '87s were the only model year that ever had a 44 rear, and they were the rare towing version.

Its a 35 , they did have 44's in that year but only in the limited with trailer package and never had a 44 with 3:55's that I have ever heard of the 60538 is the start of the BOM number but its not complete should have one more number and a dash and another number.

I've heard of folks saying that 87-89 models had 44's in the rear, but I've been to a MILLION junkyards, and I've only seen them in 87 year models. That, and not every 87 has a 44 in the rear. I've seen plenty of 87 Comanche's and Cherokee's that had 35's in the rear. If you're looking for a 44 Long Island XJ, just remember "Diamond Dana"- the 44, 50, 60, 61, 70 & 80- ALL have differential covers shaped like a diamond.

87-90 had the Dana 44 in the rear. The D44 wasn't standard, it was an optional axle that came with most tow package setups.
