Need Help!
Hey guys,
So my brother was about to sell a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Some kid took it for a test drive with him in the car and while idling, put the jeep into 4H. All of a sudden the jeep kind of starts shaking and it won't go back into 2wd. Tried to move the lever back to 4H and there is like no resistance or anything when changing from 4h to 4L and regular 2wd. When turning especially the jeep kind of jerks like it's trying to move, but just can't really. Anyone know what it could be? I'm guessing transfer case, but I'm far from a mechanic. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I would try and see if anything is frozen up or disconnected. Go under the Jeep and see if the transfer case shift linkage is still connected. Try shifting it manually from below. See if the from shaft is locked up or something.
When you say "no resistance" you mean moving the lever it just freely moves back and forth as if it's attached to nothing? Also when you say "shaking" do you mean when it tries to move? Is the engine still idling the same otherwise?

Alright the linkage was detached and when we can reattach it but it's not staying in place unless we use a zip tie or duct tape (i assume it just needs to be replaced) so there is tension in that now. However, i think it is still stuck in 4H even though the lever is at 2wd. So does that mean I need to manually adjust the linkage from underneath to match up with the lever inside the car? If so how do I do that exactly?
Straighten the linkage rod, loosen the bolt in last picture on the rod (13mm) put shift lever in 4lo, manually shift case into 4lo at the shift cam (lever on side of case at end of linkage) ... retighten. Test for function.
