Naughty tranny or Naughty engine?
today i was pulling out of a parking lot on to a 45 mph road, so in a valiant attempt to not slow the oncoming traffic i gave my XJ a little juice out of the gate! It pulled out fine but about 3 seconds later my foot kept going towards the floor but it wasn't going anywhere! about 2 seconds after that i took my foot off the gas and gassed it again and it drove fine about 100 feet down the road i smelled something burning for about10 seconds and then the smell went away...I drove around for about 15 minutes to see if it would happen again and nothing, it drove like a top! i know my tranny needs to be flushed, so that could be it but i has never happened before, i think it could also my injectors getting clogged, or possibly something entirely different...what do the doctors in the house think?!?!?!
It is a 1999 XJ limited, 131770 milage, 4.0 I6...AW4 transmission?
PS. when i say gasin it i don't mean punching to the pedal to the floor either, it was gentile but not grandma driving

Usually when the gas pedal cuts out like that, it's something as simple as a tune up. Throw in some fresh spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. I'd do that first before anything more drastic. As far as the burning, it could be a number of things. Are you leaking anything anywhere?

The burning smell is not a good thing. Need to figure out exactly WHAT you were smelling!
1. Verify transmission fluid. It needs to be at the correct LEVEL on the dipstick, it should be RED in color, and it should not smell BURNT. Fresh fluid (Dex/Merc III compatible) is essential to the performance of the AW4 transmission. Do not rest until your tranny fluid meets these conditions.
2. If this happens again, you could be having trouble with your "throttle position sensor". This sensor is directly involved with shifting characteristics of the AW4 transmission.

That's why I recommend starting with an inspection of your transmission fluid. If you are burning fluid, many times the loss of that fluid will show up when you check LEVELS.
