So both of my seals are leaking at the top like most everyone's at some point and I've been trying to find a place to buy new ones but I feel like none of the websites provide good enough descriptions or provide pictures of where the seal they are trying to sell will go, it's all based on words and descriptions. Since I'm new to the XJ for the most part I don't know the technical terms for some of these things so can someone help me and either show me where I can buy one of those seals or tell me exactly what it's called. Thanks!!!
Just to be clear we are talking about this:
So I always wondered about that part. Cause when I swapped out my glass in my '00 to factory privacy glass I really did not see how you remove that strip from the glass.Of course I did not spend a lot of time thinking about it either.
So that being said. Poking around in my catalogs is a bit confusing. Here is a shot out of my '94 to '96 parts catalog.
Thinking #8 but nothing is coming up with that number
So trying to think outside the box a little this is a shot out of my '91 to '93 parts catalog.
#1 actually gives you a number we can find. 55005666
Which leads me to here:
So I can't be sure of any of this. But I do notice one thing. In your picture it almost looks like the strip on the right is out of position.
Like it has slid down.
Have you tried pulling it up?
Also in an effort to help people I did a write up for stuff like this.
Maybe check it out.
Division bar window seal. I replaced all of mine with parts from Team Cherokee. The full kit is expensive but youll think youre riding in a new vehicle when you seal up all those air leaks.
If you dont want to buy a new one, you can try to pull the seal up. It goes all the way down to yhe bottom of the window track. If you pull it out of the channel a little bit at the top you should have enough leverage to pull up and move it. Becareful, if those seals are hard and brittle you risk breaking them doing this.
Heres a quick vid where i talk about the seals a little bit. The job isnt hard overall.
Hahaha I watched your video yesterday! I know someone famous from YouTube now!!!! It would have been really awesome if you could have made the video while doing the repair at the same time. Thanks for all the info everyone and I figured it was the divider bar seal but I wanted to be sure. I'm ninety-nine percent sure it's broken at the top because it's not a straight line across it's definitely angled like it was broken. Wonder why they make it such a pain change...
Wow, thanks for that link!
I've been looking for that seal for a long time (the front window actually). There are others similar seals for different vehicles out there, but I haven't found one that's 'right'.
When you fixed the division bar seal on the back windows and you just slid the seal "up", do you feel like you would have to remove the division bar? Or can I take the interior panel off and just slide the seal up without taking the rivet out?

If all you want to do is move the seal up you can probably roll the windows down pull the top part of the seal out a little and move it up. The only reason the division bar needs to come out is if you are replacing the seal that runs around the outside of the windows because the division bar has an L shaped bracket that goes through a cut out in the top of the seal.
A '96 might be riveted but on a '97 and '00 they are just sheet metal screws.
Both on the top L shaped bracket and in the door for the lower one.
yes those are there and are screws. But there is a third point its connected behind the sheet metal.close to the bottom edge of the window frame that is a rivet
It's possible they removed that in later models i guess.
