Are you sure all the cables are adjusted correctly after the fluid change?

Some friction materials used in auto trans (clutch plates, bands, etc) don't play well with water. I don't know if this applies to the AW4 or not.

From what I understand, water is pretty hard on the friction linings (dissolves the glue that bonds them together, I believe). I did a bit of searching. Here's one article: http://quality-trans.com/wp-content/...1/11/water.pdf
It's over 20 years old, but many points are still valid.

Once when I changed my filter mine slipped really bad and popped into neutral randomly. After a bunch of trouble shooting and other bull**** I found out that the intake boss on the new filter(crappy Chinese one) was a mm or two too short. It wasn't able to suck the fluid up. Just an idea.

That's strange. You may want to try a couple more fluid changes and see what happens.

Dan91 makes a valid point. Where did you get your filter? What brand?

MOPAR filters from the dealer aren't that expensive. If you don't have a Chrysler dealer around you you may want to use a Wix filter. I think O'reilly has them.

I'm new to Cherokees, so not familiar with the AW4, but it is possible there is a separate band for reverse-first.

Try adjusting your Throttle Valve Cable (TV Cable) and see if that helps.

Search this forum, and others, for instructions.

What ATF did you put in your AW4 when you changed it? Did you just drain 3-4 quarts of ATF out of the pan then refill the same amount?
