Smile My experience with a bad Crank Position Sensor (CPS)

This is my first post here, apologies if this is in the wrong spot or if you do not allow nonquestions in these threads.
I just wanted to share my timeline and experience dealing with a faulty CPS

I drive a 2001 Jeep Cherokee SE, it has 160k
One afternoon I was out at a WMA near my place and I hit a rocky bump and my car stalled. It is worth noting that my car only stalled mechanically (engine shut off) but the dash gauges and everything remained on and the radio continued to play music. Immediately, I threw it back into neutral, it cranked for roughly 3-4 seconds (longer than usual), and started right back up and drove like a charm. As I was continuing to drive, I noticed that my temp gauge would drop from the current operating temperature (roughly 210 degrees) to exactly 100 degrees, and then back up to the operating temp. This would happen a lot, probably every 3 minutes or so. Everything else was fine outside of the dropping gauge, but after I signed out at the WMA office and put my car into reverse to back out of a parking spot, it sputtered and kicked anywhere within the range of 200-2000rpm. Just constantly bucking up and down until eventually it stalled. I was able to get it back into drive and make it home but everytime I put the car in reverse from there on out it would either sputter and fluctuate rpm or stall completely. I eventually took it to the mechanic (5 miles away) and they found I was 2 qts low on transmission fluid so they topped it off and were completely unable to replicate the stalling. The issue completely vanished for the entire 4 days they had the car. They had even driven my car up to the transmission specialist in kissimee (25 miles away!!!!) and had no issues whatsoever with reverse or normal driving.

After this, I picked my car back up and drove it home fine, and the reverse was also working great until the next morning when I went to back out of my garage and it stalled again. I was frustrated but I continued to use the car with intermittent stalling in reverse as I usually would. Publix trips, visiting friends, errands etc. Until one afternoon I had it in drive at a stop sign and the car simply just died. It was the first time it died in any gear other than reverse so I put it in neutral and tried to turn it over but it would crank and crank and crank with no luck at all. I eventually saw the "no bus" message on my dashboard and I knew I was definitely having some electrical issues. I ended up having to be towed to the mechanic and he was unable to get the car to start either (battery was strong, fuel rail pressurized, starter sounded good, but never would catch and start).

After checking all the grounds, I came to this cherokee forum and started reading about people with similar issues and I had the mechanic try a new CPS and it seems to have completely fixed my problem. I was staring a transmission rebuild right in the face but thank god it was only this 100$ sensor.

Thought this might help someone. I must say it was really shocking how severe the symptoms are considering it was just a faulty sensor, and how quickly things went from bad to worse. Had I not read this forum I probably would have had a brand new transmission on a car that still can't be started!!

My '00 would stall when she reached operating temperature.
Like you turned off the key but everything still stayed on.
But would start right back up.
Maybe I would get to where I was going. Maybe she would stall again but still start and get to where I was going.
All very short trips.
As time went on it got worse.
I was thinking CPS.
But no CEL and none of the other weird stuff I read about when researching this.
Weird gauge crap, the No Bus reading, etc.
Asked the forum and most seemed to agree with me.
Replace it and all was fine. Experiencing thermal failure was the term used.
It appears you got the whole ball of wax, symptom wise, with yours.
LOL.

Mine just refused to start one day. Totally dead. It did set the proper code. I tried to order the Mopar part and got sent the wrong part so I went to auto zone. Their part kind of worked. Got the Mopar part and all is good.

Pain in the rear having to do an ugly job twice.

Cool Cps seems to be the fix

new poster here, and on the first try i found what i was looking for.
i have a 99 chero sport 5 speed and gods honest truth-she has over 550k original miles on her.
no sooner does she reach operating temp she just shuts down, i pop into neutral and she fires back up.
no CEL, no bells ,no whistles.
from what i am reading on here it is the CPS.
so it is worth the shot in replacing and see if it fixes it..
soon i will post a pic of my old rust bucket and her odometer.
thank ya'll!
