Default Mpg increase

I have an 01 Cherokee with 3 in. lift 31's and 4.10 gears. It has custom bumpers, winch, and roof rack. Is there anything I can do to improve gas mileage?

Thanks

Drive slower?

Actually, only sorta being a smartass there. If you drive 65 instead of 70+, you will see an improvement. Cherokees are basically bricks, the faster you go the more the engine has to work to push against the air. 65mph seems to be the sweet spot. Going 70mph I can get 22mpg on the highway, but then, I'm not lifted or on 4.10s yet.

Another thing that'll help with mileage is making sure the engine is running in peak form. That means doing a tuneup if you haven't done one recently: New (properly gapped) plugs, new plug wires, new cap & rotor, new air filter, ect. It also couldn't hurt to run some decent fuel injector cleaner through, like Lucas, or even seafoam it.

As for mods you can do, supposedly the Neon fuel injector swap improves drivability and mileage if you can keep your foot out of the throttle. You could also try a K&N drop-in filter, but people seem torn 50/50 on if that helps much. Some people claim a stronger ignition coil can improve performance as well, since it'll make a stronger spark that stands a better chance of producing a cleaner burn.

Some things that can contribute to bad mileage:
  1. It's a freaking Cherokee. It's got the aerodynamics of a brick.
  2. You are driving too fast, slow it down a bit.
  3. Pull away from intersections slower. Your destination will be there when you arrive. In fact, some Quantum Theorists propose that your destination doesn't exist until you directly observe it/arrive at it. So really, if it doesn't exist until you get there, how can you be late?
  4. Dirty / Worn spark plugs
  5. Worn spark plug wires
  6. Worn cap/rotor
  7. Dirty Air Filter
  8. Vacuum leaks.
  9. Clogged Catalytic converter
  10. Clogged fuel injectors
  11. Improperly inflated tires, tires that aren't at the right pressure will have more rolling resistance.

Great list CodeXJ.

If i could only keep my foot off that pedal... my only downside

I have a K&n intake, high flow cat, flowmaster, tune up (e3 plugs, wires, cap, rotor, clean air filter, gumout fuel treatment), neon in jectors all done to mine. Just happy im still BARELY in the double digits

all terrains are lighter, but not by much. i would just keep what makes me happy, the MPG increase or decrease wont be much between the two if there even is any.

From my experience e3 are crap and casue more problems then anything in a 4.0l.

Best mileage mod you can do is buy a $500 beater off CL and the gas you save from not driving the XJ around town will pay for the beater.
