Is this a good or bad idea? Seems like a good way to carry it but maybe a good way to destroy it too? I have limited wheeling experience.

I say no. I like them across the hood but none of my buddies do.

im not a fan of the way across the hood looks but my concern is damaging the jack by crushing it between a rock and the bumper

My plan : build a bumper the jack can go in. Metal plate bumper that opens up. if I were you though I would put it on the roof rack. If you don't use a roof rack make a mount for the inside

I mounted mine inside because I removed the rear seat for extra room, but I have seen quite a few mounted to the roof rack. I like mine mounted inside to keep it cleaner so it will work when I need to use it.

I mounted mine to the front bumper. I drive down a dirt road from time to time and the back of my truck gets covered in dirt. So far so good on the front.

my hilift lasted 3 weeks outside before it didn't work and I had to rebuild it. that was properly greased and maintained, too.

I have had mine on the outside for 4 years now and it works just fine, but keep it off the rear bumper because i drag mine all the time off rocks and stuff it has even bent the Hi_lift mounting brackets...(btw the "hook" is always pointed up while off roading. it was just down in this picture

i am looking for a new mounting location because of this.

I keep mine in the back against the backseat and the sub. It fits perfectly and the sub keeps it from moving. They sell a kit to mount it on the backseat but its like $75 and that seems like a waste of money to me.

Securely fastened inside the vehicle away from the elements to ensure it works when needed.
The amount of abuse off road bumpers endure, a highlift mounted there would either get beat to pieces or riped off.
I especially don't like the idea of mounting a heavy highlift to thin sheet metal that is the hood... in an accident, I bet that highlift would make for an effictive skull smashing projectile.

same with it being loose inside the jeep. in an accident or vehicle rollover, i wouldn't want the jack, or the sub box smashing my head in either.
spend the money, or at least make a mount to secure it properly. or always wear a helmet.

i've had mine mounted on my roof rack for about 6 years through every season. works fine every time. and i can roll my jeep and it will still be mounted.

plus, i don't like the look of them mounted on the bumpers or hood. looks ghetto.

The sub is bolted down and I always carry 5 helmets for me and all my passengers haha.
