You can use the 2000 block with no issue's at all. Now for your choices use the 1998 head if good might as well have it gone through while off, the 2000 head (0331) as you might know may have problems of weakness between cylinders #3 -4 so a new head will fix this unless you know it has been replaced. As far as the 2000 block having no distributor is true just use the 1998 parts and dist.You will have to use all the 1998 main acc.,and sensors this is no big deal to do since you have them all already. By just using the block and maybe the head (1998 is the one I would use if it's good) you shouldn't have any problem using the 98's wiring harness and ecu.I'M NOT QUITE SURE WHAT THE OTHERS ARE TALKING ABOUT ON HAVING TO USE THE 2000 HARNESS AND ECU but oh well,some of them are try to make a moutain out of a mole hill. Besides the labor involved it's a straight foward swap.Also would you PM me if you wish to get rid of the 2000 ecu or if you have more ?.g/lIf you end up using a new 0331 head I think you will need to use the header and intake from the 2000,I think the ports are differant from 1998 to 2000 I'm sure they are ,maybe someone that knows this for sure can chime in, or you can just measure them.g/l

 

The original poster was wanting just to drop in the 2000 engine and drive. He wasn't talking about swapping all the stuff you mention. You are basically advocating using the 2000 block only. Fine. But that wan't what he wanted to do.

If he used the 2000 engine, he also has to change all the stuff different from the '98. Including some harnesses, fittings, and the ECM/PCM.

Indeed. It's nothing but an expensive headache. A $300 wiring harness (assuming you found the APPROPRIATE one at a junk yard) with a $250 ECU (that's the minimum you'll pay on one of those brand new) and you've already spent more on extra parts in the conversion than you have on the engine itself.

That's the equivalent of totaling a car vice fixing it. Not worth it, even if you knew exactly how to do it because you had done that exact conversion before. And the chances are if you had already done it before, you probably wouldn't do it again. The juice isn't worth the squeeze. If you're going to go as far as pulling your own out and put another one it, I'd rather just stroke it and reinstall it. Then you have a rebuilt engine on your hands. All the money you'll spend on a head gasket set, new timing chain cover, thermostat and all new hoses doesn't even amount to half the price of the wiring harness.

And even if you did go through with the conversion... I'm sure you'd find out half way through it there are many things you overlooked or one major thing. It happens all the time.

 

What aluminum head???? All 4.0 heads are cast iron. You are referring to the 0331 produced predominantly in 00-01.

 

Wiring harness at the local u pull here are 15$, ECU is 15$ too i believe.

 

Well guys apperciate soothe help but I'm just gunna by a new motor for it that will fit will be worth it in the long run I really don't feel like converting it soo I'm gunna spend the money to get a new one plan on having the jeep along time ordering it tomorrow haha ya it's funny people are amazed at what a 16 year old can do these day
