I'm having trouble getting my stock replacement motor mounts in. The first set I bought from Summit Racing. I didn't try to install them when I noticed the metal sleeve in the rubber is shorter than the mounts I pulled out. So I ran to O'reilly and bought theirs, which were basically identical to stock. However, I could not get the engine mount holes to line up. I have the 2 that attach the mount to the frame loose on both sides. When I get 1 bolt in, the other side is about 1/2" off. I am using the lift by oil pan with block on floor jack method. Even with this, I'd have to put a block on the passenger side between the mount perch and the engine perch to get the engine to rotate as it lowered.

Are the ones from Summit shorter on the sleeve to make install easier? Do the mounts need to control engine position fore and aft, or just rotationally, side-to-side, and up-down?

This job was not as easy as advertised. The OFA was a PITA, I had to remove my A/C drier/accumulator (ok, because A/C is dead). I'm going to swap the OFA for direct oil filter too.

You are correct that the mounts only control "up and down". They do not control front to rear. Every manufacturer's parts are a little larger or smaller in design, that's just the sad nature of the game. Have you tried substituting the one summit mount for the parts stores to see of that helps any?

 

Remember to loosen the transmission mount cross member nuts.

 

The engine can shift when removing the old. The easiest way to replace the front two would be to do it one at a time and loosen the transmission mount.

For the passenger side I use an area closer to the alternator so the engine would tilt on that side, and vice versa for the driver side.

I have not yet tried one of the summit mounts. The sleeve is about 1/4"-3/8" shorter. But I was thinking that might be a next move.

Like said, loosen the transmission mount and do one side at a time. Bleepinjeep replaced his without a hoist. Not what i consider fun, but doable. >

 

Mine shifted a little but a small pry bar fixed that. Also the sleeve in mine was slightly longer so I had to grind it down just a bit for it to fit.
It can be a trying job if tings do not line back up properly.

 

They always shift and can be a huge PITA. Lots of threads here concerning that issue. I had luck with using a jack and a block of wood under my oil pan moving it slightly while fiddling with the mount bolt. It just takes patience and perseverance sometimes.
