Default Mismatch differentials gearing

Hey I purchased a 94 cherokee 4x4 manual. It has the front drive shaft out when bought it and the guy said he got it like that. I install a drive shaft and with no surprise, it seems someone did an axle change and now has mis mach gears. When I put it in 4x4, it makes a pooping sound in the front diff.

Now im trying to figure out my next move.
Should i regear?,
Find a junk yard cherokee and get another axle?
Or Explore F8 swap?

I have identified my rear axle as this style: http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/pics/axle_825.jpg

so dana 8.25?
Could someone tell me what to look for in the junk yard to get a axle with matching gears?

I don't know if it would be better to swap the front or rear. It seems there is a 3.07 and a 3.55 so id rather the 3.55. was the difference just auto vs manual?

Its a chrysler 8.25, not a dana... I would go with 3.55 front and rear

Have you open the front axle up yet to see if it was a axle change and not just a crapped axle?

Thx, Yea I accidentally typed dana 35, then realized i had a Chrysler 8.25 just mistype.
So then I suspect one of my axles has the stock 3.07 gearing and one has an automatics axle with gearing of 3.55. So how can I figure the one with 3.07 gearing. BC that is the one to be swapped.

I can do that. It seems like there could be a way to jack the vehicle up and rotate the tires and count turns of the drive shafts?

Again have you open both axles??? Because it seems like you are just taking a guess without actually knowing, again open both axles and read the ring gear to see what gearing it is, good chance it might but is can also be anything else till you look and see.

Yes. # of teeth on ring gear divided by # of teeth on pinion.

See anything broken in there?

I've had trouble following the dialog of this thread but it seems like you have 4.11 gears in the rear. Is it manual or auto? Auto = 3.55 from the factory, manual = 3.07. I think there was a towing package on some years that had the deeper gears.
