Default Mileage rolled back? Does this pass the smell test?

Hi.

I purchased my 2000 XJ in January.

It had 125k miles when I bought it.

I removed the ashtray to take it out and clean it, and found this:

Is this sticker from a different car? Has the mileage been rolled back on my car? Is there a way I can tell if it was rolled back? Thoughts? Opinions? Help?

Thanks.

Here is the report I found when the car was for sale on Ebay: (Note, it was not purchased off Ebay)

Does seem a little odd, 12K in almost 6yrs. but 60K in 7 months I doubt.

unless the PCM was reflashed with in-correct mileage plug in a scan tool and read vehical information, if you have a decent tool that reads all the pids you can see PCM mileage.

Agreed. Take it to a dealer and have them scan it. The scanner will tell you if the odometer andecm mileage match.

If it was, you'll never know if the mileage was rolled back or not

Does the odometer reading get stored in the PCM? ?In the cluster? Or both?

If both, I will get a different number when I scan it, correct?

If in the PCM, and the PCM was swapped, the previous owner would need to mark off the true mileage as unknown before signing the back of the title, filling in the mileage, wuldn't he?

most newer cars mileage is stored in the PCM and BCM if either fail they have to be reflashed by the dealer, the info that is programmed into them is whatever the person who had it reflashed says.

A Carfax may also be helpful. Each time something is reported, it is entered into Carfax.

I know it's unlikely but if a vehicle has a new motor AND trans installed(not sure if xfer case applies to this) by a certified mechanic, they can legally reset the odometer. I would say it's a much better chance that the sticker is from a different vehicle. Most oil change places will not run a different oil weight than stock and 15w-40 is definitely not stock.

Go to Jeep.com. In the owners section, after you put in the vin number, you can look up part of the service history on the vehicle. Mileage will be shown.

the 15w-40 makes it look more like it's from a different vehicle

Ok, I spoke to the service manager at dealer who did the service, but his records on that vehicle are old and no longer on record. He can't say if this vehicle was ever in for service, and certainly cannot provide the mileage this work may have been done at.

I like the idea of that weight oil never being used by the dealer and this sticker being from another vehicle.

Besides, I love my Jeep and if I found out she had 200k on her versus 125k, what would I really do about it anyways???
