4-wheel drive makes loud bang when disengaging
99 cherokee automatic 4.0
The 4-wheel drive is slow to disengage. I can hear it trying, and it seems to disengage ok when going around a corner. Sometimes when it disengages it's loud; like loud enough to scare the crap out of me. I can feel it bang through the floorboards. What the heck is wrong?
Thanks
Martin

Try letting off the gas a second or 2 after you disengage the 4wd? If I shift from 4 to 2wd with torque on the drivetrain, it will strain and then clunk when it disengages. If I shift outta 4 with light gas pedal then let off the gas after I shift so there's no torque being applied, it just clicks a little and disengages instantly. It's noticeably worse/louder on dry ground or pavement compared to snow or mud or gravel.

Driving in a straight line, pull the lever to the desired mode. Tap the gas and let off. Sometimes twice. Do not drive around corners with 4wd engaged on hard pavement. You put tension on the driveline.

I think more specific info on how to assess and diagnose any potential damage is ok too, it could be that the TC is going, it could be fine, but here's stuff to actually check over.. The driveshafts shouldn't have any play in them, so if they do, there's a good chance a joint is getting old and causing some clunkiness. If the front shaft has play, just go get a new front shaft from JY (mine was 80 bucks) and slap it on. What about wheel joints? Could be when 4wd is engaged its putting torque to front DS and therefor putting extra torque on wheel joints?
What TC do you have?

wow i guess i am too scared of breaking anything on my jeep. i come to a complete stop and put my jeep in park b4 i even think about changing into part or full time 4wd. it just keeps me sure that i am not putting stress on my drivetrain. some times it is a bear to get out of 4wd back into 2wd. but i just back up about 10 feet then put it in d then go forward a few feet and it changes back no problem.

Read the owner's manual, boys. Stop only to shift into or out of 4 low.
