massive oil leak
Well I finally finished the rear main and driver side u joint the other day and while driving home i noticed smoke and the smell of burning oil. After parking it and looking at where the oil might be coming from it looked the the filter. I bought a tune up kit from Crown and used there filter. Could it be possible to have the wrong filter? Do the filter numbers change from year to year? I have an 88 and i am not sure if i should just change out the filter and waste more money on oil or start looking at something else first. I really want to get this Jeep on the road again and start enjoying the winter. I will get some pictures posted later when i get a chance.

I'm not familiar with Crown or what filter number you have or need. If the sealing o-ring is wrong, it's entirely possible that the filter would leak badly. Another thing people sometimes do is accidently leave the old rubber o-ring on the housing when changing the filter. This will also cause a bad leak. Sorry I can't tell you more, but without looking at the problem, it's difficult to diagnose.

Yeah i understand, I know the old O ring it not on the filter housing i checked that before hand since that is a common problem with filters. The new filter did not have a part number on it (first problem) also did not have any stamps or name (second problem) I am going to get a Fram 3985 since that is what Fram says fits. Well wish me luck i have spent too many hours doing simple jobs on this beast.

87 to 90 used metric threaded oil filters and 91 up used standard threaded ones. The later filters won't thread on to your Renix motor.
Oil sender unit get busted during the filter change?

finally had a chance to go out a look at what happened and the oil filter was just alittle too big and popped of due to either vibration or oil pressure, maybe a combo of both, either way i put a new filter on and filled her up with oil. I am waiting until day light tomorrow to start it up and keep an eye on it to see if there is any movement with the new filter.
