Default Marker lights turn on odometer turns off while applying brakes?

I just picked up a 01 Sport and have noticed that the odometer turns off when I apply brakes but today while pulling in my fathers shop noticed the front marker lights turn on while pulling in behind his Ram. What would cause this? If I turn on my markers or headlights it does not do it just does it when the lights are off? Any ideas would be great. Also btw great site... I have been reading on xj's here for a long time and this one I bought had a stuck hatch but found out how to open and fix it on here and now it works great.

Thanks guys

did you ever figure out what was wrong with the braking/lighting issue? I just bought a 2000 Cherokee sport 4 door, and am having the same issue. ALSO my hatch is stuck.. how did you get it open? ive tried playing with the latch inside but nothing works.

Could be a ground issue.

As for the hatch being stuck, there's an adjustment rod in the door that has a tendency to slip causing the handle to not work properly. I ended up just cutting a hole on the inside plastic so I could reach in and fix it whenever it slipped. I guess the best solution would be to replace it with something better.
