Hey ya'll. 2000 xj 4.0. Changed oil today. Admit that I waited a little to long. About 4500 miles. Had a napa gold filter on there running 10w-30 napa oil. As always. Drive the XJ long distances on and off road consistently ( live in Wyoming). Changed oil and filter and only about 3.5 quarts came out. Didn't smell burnt to me. Have a small oil filter adapter leak but usually about a quart maximum between oil changes. Any idea what could cause this much of a loss in a few months? Maintenance I can do to help prevent this and keep the motor running solid? Thanks guys.

Not any maintenqnce you can do to limit oil loss lol. First step is to degrease and wash the entire engine and then go for a drive. Leaks should be obvious. Could it be burning it? Possibly. But start by addressing the problems that you KNOW exist, and go from there.
