Default Looking at an XJ...weird question

So I have searched and researched.

I m looking at a 96 Cherokee, that the owner says has the renix system on it. I know what renix is on the surface (I am not new to building/tuning etc)

He told me he bought the Jeep with the renix already there and the motor knocking and then swapped in a motor/tranny combo from a lower mileage XJ. Fine.

Is there any viable reason as to why someone would go from the OBD2 back to renix... I guess I could see it it was a stroker or something.

He also said it passed emissions the last two years.

Does all this ad up? Any drawback, or concern? Would I be getting the benefit of the HO power and the renix diagnosing?

Thanks!

Wow, sounds like a real cluster, is it cheap?

ya...I mean I guess. It has a 4.5 in rough country lift good tires, looks decent.

Needs a t-case though. asking 1500

I haven't driven it yet...still trying to figure out if it's even worth it.

Pass on this one. It will be nothing but a bunch of headaches.

Cluster is right. I believe according to emissions laws, you are able to repower to a newer engine. Not to an older system. The 96 would have had a ODB II system and the renix would have only had a rudimentary ecu to handle the fuel injection. The now test emissions through the ODB port in most areas. It wouldn't pass today.
I agree, pass. Unless you want a project, then the price is X3 too high.

I really mind a little of a project...I am looking to use it as a boy scout/camping rig.

Here is what the ad says..

96 jeep xj limited has 96 HO with renix system Rc 4.5" lift full leafs JKS lowers Has 31" km's about 85% fresh HP dana 30stock 3.55 can txt picks runs and drives NEEDS A TRANFER CASE

I thought maybe it was an early build 96 with obd1, but he said when he put in the low mileage motor, he had to use the TB, intake manifold and distributor that was already on the jeep. Says he drives it 37 miles a day and has for 2 years.

I might go look at it. There is another 95 XJ 2 door 5 spd with upcountry susp for the same price. I like the 5spd, but would rather have a 4 door.

pass on it... are you sure its a 96?? look at the build date on the door... could be a 95 or below... renix wiring and obd2 wiring are very different... and in 96 a limited was not offered... just a fyi... any pictures of it?

Maybe...he said the door tags dont show build date...he said when he bought it, he wondered the same thing....

Maybe its not a 96, it'd make more sense. Why would someone go through all that effort to go to renix?

Wouldnt that just tell what intake manifold was used?

I mean he said when he bought it and put in the 96HO motor, he had to use the manifold that was on his jeep.

if he had to use his manifold it had to be a renix manifold.. so it has a 96 ho long block... What transfer casw does it have? np231 or np 242 most limited came with a np242...

not sure...it needs to be replaced. I can't imagine that is a terribly difficult job, right?

Or expensive.

He did a full motor/tranny swap out of the 96 HO
