I think it depends.
I always thought Canyons were Canyons.
Turns out that might not be the case.
If I understand what I have read correctly if they came on a Grand Cherokee they are 7".
If they came on a TJ they are 8".
I think there is a way to tell visually from a picture but forgot what it is.

Well those images wont open on my work computer.... Stupid IT department. I dont know where they came from since they were on my XJ when I bought it. But, if it matters, I have 235/75/15's on the rims. I wonder if they are stamped on the inside and I can crawl under and check....


EDIT.......... 235/75 is 9.25" wide....... so I guess that still doesnt tell me if i have a 7" or 8" wide rim. The tires bulge just a hair, but I thought they were just low on air (that I always forget to check when I get home from work). So maybe it is 7".
Either way I'll check for stamp inside when I get home. (and check my air pressure)

 

I'm asking because I'm working on piecing my 4.5" lift together, and I'll be getting 31's, so if I need 8" rims for those 10.5" wide tires, Id like to know sooner than later...........

 

31's on 7's would be fine. Looking at that rim I'd be concerned with the backspacing though.

Buying tires is a PITA if youre buying something that isn't factory and you're not a tire/rim wizz...

 

Is this a picture from Craigslist? Usually the size, width and offset are stamped on the back of the wheel, or you can grab a tape measure and measure between the beads (or outside the beads and subtract about 1/2-inch). Of course on Craigslist, you're lucky if they get the number of bolt hole right...

 

Any tire shop will have a tire caliper that they can put on the tire or rim and it reads out the width. It's just a pair of hinged plastic hooks that fit over the tire or wheel and has markings on it to show how wide the tips of the claws are apart. You can make like you're a guy shopping for tires.

If it makes any sense to you of not, I have 235/75R15's on 8" wheels and they were a PITA to seat the beads. They look like bagels because they bulge out more than they should. The tread is still wearing flat though. My mechanic has a neat tank on his tire machine that will blow the tire out violently to seat it. Scary!

My 15x8 Black Rock wheels have a 4" backspacing and the 235s don't rub anywhere.

 

I've got 15x7 Black Rocks w/4.25" bs on 235s with no rubbing. Going to 30/9.50 next.

 

BTW, I'm pretty sure stock backspacing on aluminum wheels is 5.25".

 

I'll just have to let the shop measure. I dont need to know right this second, I was just curious so I'd know if I'm going to need new rims or not. But if ya'll know 7" rim is OK for a 31x10.5, I may be fine. I wont be doing hard core wheeling, and I dont drive it around corners like I do my Camaro.... But maybe just a little worried about tire wear...

 

Specs for 31X10.50R15 tires recommend rims 7"-9" wide. Dimensions given are with the tire on a 8.5" rim. So using a 7" one will give you a bit more height. Only thing concerns me about the 7" OEM rims would be that the tires will hit the lower control arms due to the backspacing. You could adjust the stops but I don't know how much that would affect your turn radius.

 

Considering this thing can do a u-turn on the sidewalk, losing a foot or so of turning radius may not be a huge issue. I just dont want to put new tires on these rims to learn they dont work the way I want, then I'm buying some soft 8's or whatever else just to put the tires on those... I just keep forgetting to look at the backside of the rim for stamping when I get home from work. If its a 7" rim with the 5.25" BS, I probably wont use them even though I like how they look with larger tires and a lift... Dont want the rubbing.

 

I just checked a spare tire on an early 90's OEM alloy rim. It's marked 15x7-J. I measured the bs space at 5.5".
