Kelley Blue Book RETAIL value for your region ( Zip Code 93636 ) is around $6100 for that vehicle in EXCELLENT condition.
The dealer is asking $800 over that price and he knows it. Dealers always leave room for negotiation.
You should go look at the vehicle, and try to negotiate a lower price.
Use a trick against the dealer that dealers use against customers when they appraise a car for trade in. They are buying the trade in and want to pay as little as possible for the trade, so in front of the customer they look over the customers car and say little or nothing while looking it over.
This is what we called the " silent walk around ".
It's a psychological tool used to devalue the customers car in the customers mind, and here is how it works.
YOU walk all around the vehicle, slowly, looking for any and all defects that you can find. It is important that you TOUCH every defect you find and NOT say a word. Maybe shrug your shoulder or shake you head when you see a defect. See a dent? TOUCH the dent. See a scratch? TOUCH the scratch. Tires looked scuffed or abused? TOUCH the tire.
The idea is the dealer is standing there watching, as you find all these defects and it is setting up in his mind that maybe the vehicle is not worth what he is asking.
Now when you go inside and sit down, you can say .......
Considering the condition of your vehicle I am prepared to offer you < insert price here >, including all fees.
Once you have said that, say NOTHING ELSE.
The one who speaks next is the one to lose. Why?
Well once you have made an offer, what else can you do but to OFFER MORE $$$$, and you do not want to do that.
When the dealer speaks, all he can do is ....
1) Accept your offer.
2) Offer you the car at a lower price.
3) Attempt to defend his asking price.
BTW: Many will tell you the price is too high, and for many that may be the case as a lot of people do not buy from dealers, they buy from Private Parties. KBB for that vehicle from a Private Party is about $4800.

Good morning! I agree with everyone else. That is too high of a price I think as well. I just purchased one myself less than a month ago, 2001 with 121k miles for $3500 and it's in mint condition. No rust underneath other than surface rust on the axles, drive shaft considering its a northeast vehicle and exposed to road salt.
Like you I was wanting one a lot but take your time when looking for a used vehicle especially online. I suggest checking it out in person and give it a thorough inspection coz pix can still hide a lot of things especially with sellers wanting to only show the good stuff to make a quick sale.
BE PATIENT! Case in point. It took me over 3 months and driving to 3 different states to check the ones I saw online and 9 out of 10 times as soon as i get within 5 feet of the car I saw things that wasn't mentioned online. One of the cars i saw online looks mint..upon a closer look i saw sheetrock screws on the side holding the moldings up, cracks on windshield, body line not straight. There was another one that when I test drove I almost hit an incoming car coz it pulled hard to the left. I asked the dealet if he ever drove the vehicles he sells and he said no, so that was out.
Then I saw the Cherokee I have now and it was tagged for $4500. After operating it I negotiated on the price coz the suspension wasnt that great and belt was squeaking really load. Got the price down to $3500, drobe it home and tightened the belt tension and the squeak was gone and having the suspension the way it is gave me a reason to plan on a lift without any word from the wifey
So no mater how much u want one..take ur time. It is ur hard earned money u will be spending anyway.

Thanks for all the help. I looked into that 0331 defect, that sounds rough. I also think i'm gonna stay away from dealers, private party is easier to deal with.
