Default Long crank time, acts like has no fuel

I'm having an issue with my 92 Cherokee Laredo. Has the 4.0 and since I bought it about 6 months ago it has always had a very long crank before it starts but starts everytime. If I cycle the key on/off a few times first it fires right up. Leads me to believe the check valve in the fuel pump is bad correct? Second question is does anyone know if a walbro 190 fuel pump will work? There is one here local on Craigslist real cheap. Thanks guys

You are correct! More then likely you have a bad check valve. You can leave it as it is and prime it. before you start it and it won't cause any problems other then taking a bit longer to start due to the priming. As for the pump you are asking about I really don't know how good they are. But, the ones that work best in our XJ's would be the Bosch then the Carter brands. Just stay away from the Airtex brand. They are garbage.

Your pre-upate has the advantage of having the fuel pump assembly accessible without having to drop the tank. Swapping a new one in should not be too much hassle.

I did not know you didn't need to drop the tank? So there is a access port under the carpet in the back I take it then?

My '90 xj does the same thing, but priming doesn't help, think my issue is more the starter relay and or it's contacts.

Nope. If you crawl under your jeep and look towards the rear and up, you will look at the pump assembply where it is mounted into the tank...the post updates have the fuel pump assembly sitting on top.

Something similar to this you'd likely see.

Post #14 TJ mentions fires related to this.....and the OP never got back on the thread.....not saying he fell victim to it, but eh....

another nice thread regarding this...

I think if it would have worked, it would have been great and already out here as being the fix for this common XJ problem..

Only works on older modes with return line. Newer models dont have return since regulators on pump in tank not on rail.... see only supply no return...

I'm sure this problem is due to the reasons that have been discussed but for anyone clicking on this thread because they are experiencing a similar problem often a long crank time is a sign of a faulty fuel injector. If they are stuck partly open and are "leaking down" it will lead to a long crank situation

Yes, can be. Either, or or even and.
You can differentiate between leaky injectors causing the fuel pressure to drop when key off and faulty drainback valves by doing a leak down test. This will give a nice idea where to start looking for the cause.

Furthermore, a leaky injector typically gives a bit of a rough running the first few seconds after starting the engine, that then smooths out. This is caused by the clearing of the excess fuel..
