Default long crank time.

ok so my fuel pump went out in my 94 manual jeep cherokee. went to oreilly's picked up a replacement pump threw it in the tank and it started up. but now ever since i replaced my pump im getting long crank times starting up the jeep. it always starts but just takes twice if not three times as long to get the engine started as before. and another thing is i don't hear it kick on when i turn the key forward one click to get the pump primed. before i could. is there something wrong with the new pump? it seems to me the fuel system is not staying under pressure would be my guess. what do u guys think?

The check valve is in the pump assembly.

I would just take it back and tell them that the check valve doesn't work which is the truth. I've done a lot of business with O'Reilly through the years, particularly before online mail order became the way to go for the majority of parts, and I never had a problem returning an item.

My wifes 91 cherokee is doing the same thing. It cranks for 2-3x to long till it starts cold or warm doesn't matter. Sometimes it will start and act like its starving for gas. But if we jjst turn the key on the fuel pump doesnt kick on till we crank on it. On one of my vehicles I think a 86 cherokee I had a few years ago the fuel pump wouldnt kick on till it seen oil pressure so I thought that was the issue. Maybe I need to throw a new pump at it. What do you guys think?

You really shouldn't have a problem retuning it just let them know that it's defective. When you get the new one look for a Bosch. If not Bosch the next in line would be a Carter.

would you think O'rellys would let me substitute for a different brand? and turbo x j i never put a gauge to it but at the test port on the fuel rail if its been sitting for like 30 min u go to push down on the port with a little screw driver i get nothing. when it should be spraying out.

Try turning the key about 4-5 times without cranking it. Then try. If it starts right up it is your check valve. Mine has been doing this for about a year. It sounds like it starts right up because I always turn the key 4 times lol.
