the 242 isnt fulltime as in AWD it has 2WD-4FT-4PT-N-4L

2WD=obviously 2wd
4FT=fulltime for use on say snowy pavement but disengages for corners so you dont get binding and tire chirping like you would with the 231 when its in 4WD
4PT=part-time which is the same as fulltime minus the disengagement during cornering on solid surfaces, so this is like driving the 231 on pavement
N= disengages all drive
4L= low range and like 4PT it does not disengage for cornering.

now with that said the 242 is nice for areas where you get snow and like the added comfort of 4wd without the roughness of the part time 4wd.

the 231 has the nice aftermarket support(4:1 lo range kits,2Low kits,SYEs) where as the 242 has almost non exsistent aftermarket aside from SYEs and HackNTaps

as for the XJs with true AWD tcases i dont know much about them but they are out there, it seemed like there was a bit of confusion about the 242/231 so i figured id toss in some insight.

now back to the long arm kits, does anyone have input on the rough country long arm setup as i already have the RC4.5 short are kit but i am looking to move to 6 and will be going long arms in the near future

i do know that you have to get the sye and cv driveshaft when lifting a wrangler 4"+ becuase of the ds angles but there wheel base is what 10 less than an xj? well you dont have to drop the transfer case on tjs if you put the sye and cv driveshaft why are some of you saying that you have to drop the transfer case on an xj? i mean they have a longer wheelbase. i know you can change the pinion angle on tjs with ease is it that hard to change it on xjs to keep from having to drop the transfer case? thanks.

I had the same question when looking and found out the following:

1. The TC has a silver tab on the back side with the Model # on it.
2. You can call your Dodge dealer (Service) with the last 8 of the vin and they will give the info needed. Rear axle, TC, origin (Most everything I found was from the great white North)
