lifter is hitting?

Lifters are further down in the block. Under the cover are the valve stems, springs, rocker arms and top part of the pushrods. Pull the valve cover and see what's loose. Should be a visible mark if something's hitting the cover. You might also be able to feel the impact if you hold your hand on the valve cover.
Lifters can be pretty noisy, and the pushrods can carry that noise up under the cover..

^ what he said, however if the lifters/valve train was normally quiet and now all of a sudden you have a valve train noise (tappet or rocker) I would look to the cause of the tappet noise...could be just the tappet or it could be a low oil pressure issue, one leads to the other in terms of failures.
