Default lift question

I picked up a 94 xj a few weeks ago. It has a.99 grand Cherokee 4.0 with 65k on it. Body had like 265k for $800 I think it was a steal. Anyway the guy I got it from said it had a 3" bodylift on it for big tires. I didn't think anything of it at the time its my first jeep. Welk I order a rough country 1.5" lift figuring I'm already 3 up. Today I go to change the starter and notice everything is welded there is no gap between the frame and cab. So I really wanted 4" of lift I just got the kit for the 1.5 what can I do for the rest without killing my wallet? I want to run 31" tires

I don't see it as a lossss I still got a jeep with a new engine dirt cheap. I didn't open the lift kit yet maybe I can call the company and do an exchange. And yea its welded. The guy who had it before had a plow on it and welded everything together and added bracing qll over. Not to bad. Of work either. I've had gm all my life mostly 1st and 2nd gen f bodies. In learning but I do love pulling to the end of my street and right into the woods

Flyboy, 84-01 XJ's used a construction call unit-body. Yes, unit, not uni. It was Jeep's version of a unibody. There is no seperate frame. the body is the frame, just like the F-bodies you are familiar with. The Jeep unit-body is much more rigid/stout, however. It is physically impossible to do any type of body lift on an XJ due to the unit-body construction. If he said it had a 3 inch lift, then it would have to be a suspension lift. Call the place where you bought the lift and explain to them what happened. I am sure they will work with you. you should be able to clear 31's with little to no trimming of the fenders with just a 3" lift. Hope this helps and good luck. Research is your friend. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Everyone starts somewhere. I just happen to be doing the Jeep thing for all 24 years of my short life so its what I know best.

Honestly thank you. its a Hell of a jump for me from 400+ horsepower cars to a jeep. my kids are getting bigger so tiny backseats don't cut it anymore. I couldn't think of anything more as a bigger vehicle that can take my personality then a jeep. I have a lot of learning but I'm always up for it. Hell my last post basically all I know about engines just got shattered with the 4.0 I'm always up for more power. sofar I went simple I have a mess of electronic gear so i just got a 130 amp alternator, the 4 pintle investors. I'm fabbing my own hood and airbox. I want to get the lift done since the shocks are shot then tires next. it has new brakes and plumbing all around. come spring I want to make a roof rack fix some damage and paint it. The exhaust needs done work any suggestions? I usually do my own work I have a welder.

Your rear shock mount bolts WILL break when you try to remove them. There is a couple write ups on how to fix this. The 4.0L is a fairly basic engine. 2V OHV MPI engine. A stock 4.0L will go 400,000 miles if properly maintained. My 86 has 386K miles on it. Dad bought it the day after I was born and I still have it 24 years later.
