lets play a game
Name that Noise! (video)
typing this up on the computer, gonna edit it on the phone and add the video so bear with me
at 1:00 on the video, you can really hear it.. rattle rattle
1993 cherokee sport
4.0 H.O.
stock exhaust manifold, does have a crack in the usual place but i dun think its this sound.
i'm at a loss on tracking it down. i am planning to pull the valve cover and so on tocheck out the lifters etc.(already got a fel pro gasket, goodbye lame *** cork gasket.) but before i get into i'm just wondering if anyone has heard it before or what your ideas are..
i'm betting something in the valve train..
a buddy of mine is betting something in the flywheel/torque converter area
the sound is like a clunky rattle, almost like a rattlin cat converter(no i dont have a cat on it).. videos a lil hard to hear it, only does it at idle as far as i can tell.. when i turned the AC on the **** squels yeah but thats not the sound in question, but with the compressor on.. its a perfect idle rate for my engine to make music

Check the exhaust where it goes over the crossmember.
It might just be rattling on that.
Also don't quote me on this one, but it might be a loose/cracked flexplate. Search this more and read up on it.

gonna check it out tomorrow, it makes perfect.. im pretty sure it does actually stop rattling when i give it a hair of gas(putting pressure on it), but i cant be certain with on the road noise etc.. gonna try it with the brakes on and see what happens.
oh the exhaust is uh.. currently band clamped to that crossmember so no rattle there, i need to get another hanger for it

Ya could most probably be the flex plate, check the motor and tranny bushings. Probably not those but it could make a clunk noise with shot bushings

In case you need it, and I would do this as a preventative measure.:
And check all your mounts anyway.

it was the flex plate, i snugged it up and ran it and sure enough no more noise. anyways goin back out to take em out and put some blue locktite on them. thanks guys for the felx plate tip, i still cant believe i forgot about it lol.
oh yeah, ive had a eye on the motor mounts.. theyre worn sure but not sacked yet... the trans mount is questionable.. im trying to get those mounts plus control arm bushings and so on all at once though.. sort of want to have a bushing/mount weekend.. would be a great reason to celebrate the whole weekend ya know?
gonna post another video after i finish this, in case anyone is watching this and is interested
