tephlon tape. wrap 4-5 times (more is not better) and make sure you wrap in the direction of the thread so as to not undo the tape while threading it into the diff cover

^dude, what are you talking about? He's got an 8.25
Yeah man, aim the front of a truck down a hill so the fluid is moved off the cover. If the truck is on level ground, it shouldn't leak at anycase, it should be right at the bottom of that hole.

To change the fluid (I'm guessing you have not done this your self yet) You simply remove all the bolts, carefully pry the pan loose from the diff housing and let the fluid drain into a pan below. Clean the mating surfaces and bolts, apply a fresh gasket and re-torque the bolts. Pull the plug from the diff cover if you have not already, replenish the fluid with the correct p/n lubricant until it begins to run out of the cover hole. Replace the rubber plug with a fresh and pliable version. You are good to go!
FYI: There is a specified quantity of fluid that is used that may or may not cause lubricant to overflow the cover, depending on how well you clean out the housing with the cover off, how level your Jeep is when you complete the task, etc.
I just fill to over flowing and cork it.

I have a 2000 Cherokee. The rear diff leaks out of the rubber plug. I want to replace the rubber plug with a new one. I was going to make the change so I parked on a slight downhill area. When I started to remove the plug fluid started seeping out so I didn't go any further thinking if I pulled the plug I'd have oil all over the place. Is it safe to remove?

If the diff is filled to the proper level you shouldny have much come out. If tons does the diff was over filled or more likely has water in it. Pull the plug with a pan under it and see what comes out. If it is milky you should drain and refill the diff.

If your truck is aiming down hill and it still leaks out, it's over filled. You're fine. ****** that plug out and replace it, it takes all of two seconds with a replacement in hand.
