Default Knocking xj...

So here is the story, I’m looking to buy this jeep for a steal, kid says it’s blown up but it has great oil pressure, runs smooth and all, no smoke... but I had an xj before with piston damage and it sounded deeper than this, any idea if this could be a snapped skirt? Or valve train? Possibly even flex plate... video coming soon

Another part I’ll add is that the kid said his buddy bet him he couldn’t roast the tires, so he did it and that’s when the noise started, it’s hard to say if it’s flex plate related or motor related not having been able to check the thing out in person yet but the noise doesn’t change warm or cold engine

i mean, at that price id ****** it up....even if it needs a motor, you can pock up ab4.0 pretty cheap and do it yourself..or a shop should be able to do it decently cheap and you'll have a nice jeep

I wouldn't touch it at $400. You have zero idea what is going on and could be a complete motor swap to something really simple.

I mean, I’m gonna try to get it for less... the test if I buy it will be the 45 minute drive home in it if it survives lol, but nobody has any idea what that sounds like? Bent push rod? Broken? Busted skirt?

I had a 3.8 that made a noise like that..... for about an hour before it ventilated the block. If the body's in decent shape go for it. A junkyard engine doesn't cost that much.

Honestly it does sound like a hefty knock. It does seem like there is a bit of rust underneath as well. Best case it could be fixed easily, worst case the motor is toast, not to mention if the trans could be damaged as well. If you get it for cheap, see if you could rent a trailer to take it home, better than blowing the motor and being stuck on the side of the road. All in all, you could probably part it out and get some or all your money back if need be, or save the parts for another jeep.

I have dealt with a broken piston skirt and it was a lot worse than that. It did not go away at higher RPM for sure. I had a noise like that once, turned out that the AC lines had shifted and the fan was hitting them. Take the serpentine belt off and run it without the belt to see if it is one of the accessories run by the belt.
