well me and my 94 Jeep Cherokee went swimming today lol. i went in a mud hole where water came over the hood and it cut off which i exspected. i got it running again in the hole and it came out but it had a awful knock to the motor sounding like it is going from to the valves. I took it to my uncle which has his own shop and he thinks it could be further in the motor. The motor has 263,ooo miles on it so i was just going to see if i could get any pointers on where to start looking. Thanks

Start looking for a replacement engine. How do you say "hydrolock".....

You probably bent or broke something inside.

Water doesn't compress. At least one, probably more, cylinders flooded.

That's it. Sounds like the engine is done.

If he shipped water to a cylinder, the engine would run for a while, but after he shut it off, CLUNK. No nada until he cleared the H20 out of that cylinder. I blew a head gasket in a 73 Datsun pick-up out in the desert, and it was running like dog *** , but as long as I didn't turn it off, and I kept pouring water to the radiator, I could limp it back to the highway.

I made it to a gas station in El Paso, and turned off the engine.

Oops. That was a little error. Because after I had finished forlornly looking at the steaming engine compartment ("I'm screwed.") and decided to try to start it again, I got CLUNK when I turned the key. ("Agua in el cylindro, Low. You dummy.") With no pressure in the cylinders, the coolant filled up a couple of cylinder bores. I wound up trying to do a head gasket in 113 degree weather with a tarp for shade, and eventually towed it to California ($1400 U-Haul rental, even back in 1981.)

Back in Orange County, in a service bay in 70 degree weather, I put a head gasket on it. The worst part was the timing chain, but with fresh oil and filter the engine ran great when I finished, and we drove that POS for another six years until I finally put a rod through the block rolling down the street at a sedate 30 mph. (No warning whatsoever--no clunking, no loss of power, no marbles-in-a-washing-machine noises--- it just went from "Mmmmmmm" to "POW".)

So just because an engine gets hydrolocked doesn't mean it's ruined. Probably doesn't do it any good, of course.

Hydrolock is when water goes in through the intake, not the oil pan/crankcase.

Low Profile: The original poster didn't have a little head gasket leak. He took a big slug of water through the intake, under throttle. Water is hard to push through.

There is something bent or broken in there, as I posted earlier.

The next time he wants to go swimming, he should probably leave the Jeep on dry land in the water park parking lot.

As others have said; find another engine or plan on rebuilding yours. If you want to do water crossings in the future look into getting a snorkel and waterproofing your engine components (as many as you can).

well when it cut off it was out of water but it was like it died out. I finally got it back running and it started the knock. i did the same thing to my friends blazer last weekend and it runs fine. the intake only went under water right when i first hit the hole. after i got all 4 tire in it the front end was above water and the only thing submerged was the muffler pipe.

lol...dude it sounds like you need to research on how to water proof your engine, transmission, transfer case, and differentials before going back into the woods. At this rate, you and your friend will be without rigs very soon.

On the other hand, i have done the same thing in the past. I used to have a 4cyl YJ with an open element cone-type filter that was just kind of hanging out over the end of the motor. hit a water hole (didnt submerge anything) and water spash up on to the filter. died immediately and took several minutes to get it started again. ran great for a few more years until i scored a badass oil leak on the highway and blew a softball-sized hole in the block

since you said your uncle has a shop ask him what the cost is to rebuild a 4.0. If he does own a shop he will get decent deals on rebuild kits

I thought I knew something about hydrolock, having had to fix one that hydrolocked from a blown head gasket, but I have been schooled. Thanks, guys. Check out these photos of damaged connecting rods, etc. I'm thinking OP is gonna have to tear it down to see how bad it is.
