K&N flows better thus more HP but it filters less dust so you get dirt in your engine wearing it out sooner.

The K&N uses an oil-soaked cotton gauze material for filtering. It does flow VERY well, but at a price. The gauze has a comparatively large micron size of particle that will get through it. And once you factor in the cleaning and oiling materials they are not cost effective.
Ok I posted on this once before but bottom line K&N filters breath so well for one reason they allow more air/particles through. You sacrifice filtration to get that added breathability..Also the concept of K&N filters what brought about by the racing world where engine longevity is irrelevant.. Those who run K&N's and do any offroading take the breather off then remove that throttle body and take a look at the dust and dirt that's in your intake manifold..Engines need 3 things.. Air, Fuel Spark...not dirt..Cotton gauze can not and will not filter dirt properly..For those who feel they must run the K&N's do youself a favor when you go offroad get some panty hose and wrap that filter before heading offroad or get a spare paper filter and swap em when you go offroad your engine will love you for that..

The larger size of particle that will get through the K&N filters can do damage to your engine. In deep mud we have seen grains of sand pass right through K&N filters.

Phil if you still have questions we will try to answer them but we have pretty much explained the whole concept.
well i am not planning on driving through mud that could potentially hydrolock my engine so i dont think i need a snorkel. I just want something that is better than a paper filter without spending a fortune on it.

k&n filter will make noticeable hp gains case in point wife had pt criuser installed k&n drop in filter didn't tell her few days later she asked why her car seemed to have more accleration. Off road in dusty\muddy conditions might not be a good idea though.
I wish i kept those pictures. I had before and after pictures of my k&n cone filter. Before installation, intake tube was clean as a whistle. After 4 trail rides in the summer (little dusty and dry), the intake had a fine layer of dust. I tossed that S.O.B in the trash and went back to the stock paper filter. No more dust. I then built a snorkel
(this was with my TJ)

The dry element hi-flow filters are the ones that you want to use. Stay away from the oil-soaked gauze filters.
AEM, AFE and Amsoil all make dry-element filters. AEM did not make a drop-in one for the XJ.
