Default K&N filter

Are the K&N drop in filters worth it? Or should i go with one of the cone filters? I wheel the rig sometimes and take it in the mud. i will soon be adding a new catback also.

The K&N uses an oil-soaked cotton gauze material for filtering. It does flow VERY well, but at a price. The guaze has a comparatively large micron size of particle that will get through it. And once you factor in the cleaning and oiling materials they are not cost effective.

Take a look at these filters. They are available in either a square drop-in or in a cone style for cold air intake systems. Also a pre-filter sock is available for use in very muddy conditions.

I use a drop in K&N with a flowmaster 44 exhuast dropped out mid way. I can tell a big difference in power since I added it. My jeep runs on 31's with stock 3.55 open gears. When I'm running 55 (actually 60 cause of the tire size) The jeep runs at 1800 rpms. Or when I'm running 70 on the high way (actually 76) it runs at only 2200. When I kept the rpms at the same level I get around 19 mpg highway. If you actually put the jeep to the floor you can tell it really starts to accelerate at around 3000 rpms. I love the setup. Also if your doing mud and stuff I wouldn't go with a cone due to increased chance of sucking water or mud into the engine. That's why I stuck with a drop in. A cone does increase the air flow but if you want to use it for mud I'd go with a drop in.

if you do alot of wheeling in mud i wouldnt buy a K&N air filter because everytime you get back you are going to need to clean it out. have you thought about a snorkle???

I have a drop in. It definitely adds a little bit power. I plan on getting a Safari snorkel too, for those deep water crossings and bottomless mud pits. But I have always gone with a K&N drop in when ever I need a new air filter. The K&N filter have a Million mile warranty...if you clean them and oil them when needed.

I fool with suzuki Katana motorcycles and the consensus among the sport bike crowd is K&N no! factory Suzuki "The Best" even when Installing a Jet Kit.

yeah i had a home made one along time ago and everytime i went and played in the mud i would have to take it out of my cherokee and clean it and regrease it. so i just think that if you plan on playing in the mud alot you should go with a snokle. its alot more money but in the long run you wont regret it

Ok I posted on this once before but bottom line K&N filters breath so well for one reason they allow more air/particles through. You sacrifice filtration to get that added breathability..Also the concept of K&N filters what brought about by the racing world where engine longevity is irrelevant.. Those who run K&N's and do any offroading take the breather off then remove that throttle body and take a look at the dust and dirt that's in your intake manifold..Engines need 3 things.. Air, Fuel Spark...not dirt..Cotton gauze can not and will not filter dirt properly..For those who feel they must run the K&N's do youself a favor when you go offroad get some panty hose and wrap that filter before heading offroad or get a spare paper filter and swap em when you go offroad your engine will love you for that..

If you're in a really dusty area I wouldn't use a K&N either. They're great on the street, or if you are mostly in dirt and rock.
Muddy=Bad
Dusty=Bad
Everything Else=Great!

K&N makes that pre-wrap(??) stuff for the filters for dusty conditions...or maybe its pre-filter, or pre-...I just know its pre-something. lol

Increased horsepower and decreased engine life. So if you want to rebuild every year or two go K&N if you want to rebuild every ten or fiften years go AMSOIL.
