Default Just dies at stops

I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee, 4 liter inline six, automatic transmission, two wheel drive, four door. It has started dying at stops. This is intermittent, but then it won't start up afterwards for five or ten minutes. Sometimes longer. Any ideas what I'm dealing with? This is a Jeep that has been treated poorly.

Crank Position Sensor is the most likely suspect. Don't replace it.

Test it.

Replace if needed. Only use a Mopar (NTK/NGK) brand. These beasties are very picky about sensors. Even quality brands like Bosch and Echlin can't be trusted.

Also check your fuel pressure at the rail. You might have a failing fuel pump.

Soo many different reasons...

You may get every response in the book because of this. And the thing is most of them are all different, correct, and valid possible reasons too. Crank sensor (CkPS) is ussually going to be high on the list. Like it was already stated though, do not just go and replace it. You could begin to start replacing everything one by one if you go that route; CkPS, IAC, fuel pump, PCM, etc...

Based on the description of symptoms, I am going to go off in a little bit of a different direction, to sort of go out on a limb and say I think it is a vacuum issue related to the brake booster.

I asked myself, why would his Jeep be stalling to die out only when it is at stops? Is it related to using the brakes in some way? I think maybe it is..

I would say one of the other likely reason for it to stall at stops like this is because your Jeep may have a failing brake booster. When a brake booster is failing it can draw excess vacuum from the engine. This occurs when the diaphragm inside of the brake booster fails and allows air to bypass the seal. The result is the idle RPMs can drop to stall the engine. Maybe the seal needs time resetting itself in order for vacuum to build up and allow it to start again for you after the Jeep stalls out like that at stops?

I think it would be worth it to look into this.

Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies! At least, not about Area 51. The Jeeps, focus on the Jeeps. Everything else is a distraction.

That beast is still parked in the driveway. Everyone gave up on it. Then my wife offered to give it to this computer geek if he would get it off the lot. He went and pulled the engine computer and the transmission computer, both were fried. Did he go and get new ones? No. He rebuilt the ones in hand. That's what he's told me at least, since he hasn't gotten around to bring them back and plug them in and drive the damn thing off the lot.

I don't remember the particulars on that particular issue, but the wife is still driving it, and drives it to Arizona to see the kids all the time. I sweat bullets every time she pulls out.

That one we fixed. Again, I don't remember the details. The Eldest moved it to Arizona. No longer my circus, no longer my monkey.

Replaced the CPS on one, ended up just going through the Pink Cleaning Course, that seemed to solve a lot of issues. Vacuum hoses, turned out to be an issue on one. Relays were blown on one of them. Found the short after frying a few. Good Times, Good Times.
