Question Just bought my first Jeep from Brother-n-law, 96 XJ 4-door

I've fixed most issues(there were quite a few), but I'm stumped on this one. The driver's side front door seems to have been pushed forward like it was open when he backed into something. Anyway, the upper hinge weld broke from the body, leaving an exposed hole in the metal behind it, and the door latch is stuck in the closed position keeping me from closing the door to keep it lined up while I try to work. I tried to push the button on the outer handle and "trip" the latch open, but no-go. the outer button has no effect. I removed the inner door skin and sprayed WD to thoroughly soak the entire latch assembly and let it sit a while.. Still no good. This is my first Jeep, overall I've got her up to be a great machine. I don't have many tools to speak of, no welder or anything to fix the hinge, getting my @$$ handed to me by the latch situation, and can't afford to hire the work out. Anyone have helpful ideas or schematics for the latch and rod setup so I can see what if anything I'm missing? Any help is greatly appreciated. I'd really like to get her on the road.

some general advice only

the problem you have of a broken hinge is common, so search this forum archives or Google & Youtube for the repair process, which in your case, will almost certainly require door removal and welding

download the factory service manual and parts manual from cruiser54 website or search online..use the Index

If you cannot move the latch, have you tried fob, and key operation ?

Thanks a ton!! Yeah, I came across countless tales of door hinge issues while looking for answers. As I mentioned, I have minimal tools at my disposal, so I'm curious how successful the hinge repair would be if I drill and use bolts to re-attach the hinge? My Jeep has no fob, but I hadn't even considered trying the key. I'll give it a shot later, and thanks again!!

post some pics, bolts or rivets may work help, depending on the extent of the metal that is torn away, but the hinge surely has to be welded back onto the repaired metal, as per factory

do you have an acquaintance nearby that can weld, or you can pay mobile welders to come to your place

Good lord, just find someone with a MIG welder and fix it right. If you were close (but I wouldn't know because you did not add a location) I would weld it for free just so it is not half assed.
