Junkyard F8.8 Axle Reubuild
I hope this is the proper section.
Im a basic weekend wrencher; oil changes, water pumps, brakes, stereo systems, etc. But anything outside of that Im at a loss. Most stuff up to this point Ive been able to look at it and just start wrenching away and end up good when its all said and done with.
However Ive taken on the project of a F8.8 conversion to ditch my Corpo 8.25. I had a buddy do my welding for the new brackets so Im fine there, and Im slowly but surely figuring out how to convert from drum to disk brakes, and under the cover everything is in great shape. But due to the condition of the original brake calipers and rotors(excessive rust and pitting) it has me worried about my planned install next week.
I replaced said brake parts but should I stop there? Should I trust this to be road worthy if everything in the diff looks operationally sound? Are there seals/bearings for the axle shafts I should disassemble and inspect before installing in my jeep?

Yes there are. It depends on how much loot you have to dump into that axle. Check the shafts for play. A little in and out is probably normal but no side to side. Does the pinion seal leak? Prop it up and find out. How are the tubes? Check to make sure they are straight. And I do believe alot of peeps recommend welding the tubes so they don't spin.

The housing seems pretty sound. When I did the brackets I used the IRO truss and bracket kit. I had my friend, whos a welder, weld the brackets and truss, then had him stick weld the tubes since the diff is cast.
Ive had it in my garage for a month, half the time it held fluid and in that time created no leaks as a I rotated it on the jack stands from time to time. Im at work, so Ill check the shaft play when I get home.
If need be, how would I go about removing the shafts? And does the 8.8 have "c-clips"? If so I believe I skimmed a section on doing a "c-clip elimination?"

I put an 8.8 in my XJ and I made the mistake of not changing out the wheel bearings and seals and sure enough one side leaked oil so I had to pull it back apart and do it.
wheels bearings and seals are pretty cheap, better off just replacing them

Thanks for that bit of info E-Rok. As noob to axle conversion and axles as a whole stuff like that really helps. Thanks for saving the potential PITA of having to deal with that down the road.

its pretty straightforward. pull your axle shafts, then you pull the bearings/seals out with a slide hammer, then pop the new bearings and seal in with a piece of pvc pipe or something of a similar diameter

I also run an 8.8 it is a c-clip axle that uses a bolt to hold the cross pin in place. If you are running disc brakes I dont see the need for c-clip eliminator unless you are doing a shaft upgrade. like said before axle bearings and seals are cheap so not a bad idea to replace them also check the oil for any metal and this could tell you alot about the axle condition
